1/2 or 3/4 lifter preload? roller lifters
Okay, what's best? 1/2 turn or 3/4 turn after zero lash for lifter preload. Or do folks use the factory manual setting of "one full turn" after zero lash.
I've read many threads with references to all 3 but no definitive answer.

1/2 turn sets the .030" preload in the lifter and will be fine.

Unless you're crutching something, you won't see any difference between 1/2 turn, 3/4 turn, and 1 full turn.
The good ol' boy engine builder fellow racer I talk to who seems to know every cheap trick out there, and not only that but also what works and what doesn't, uses factory roller blocks for his roots-blown 383's, and sets Chevy hydraulic lifters, flat or roller, at 1 full turn down.

Re: 1/2 or 3/4 lifter preload? roller lifters
way too much time and concentration involved
get em close
start the motor and wear some good gloves that are made of leather that you dont mind getting oil on
adjust the rocker untill the tip of the rocker has good resistance to you moving the tip across the top of the valve from side to side
what I mean is grab the very front of the rocker arm with your thumb and forefinger and move it from side to side sliding it across the valve
there should not be any play here but the rocker should still move slighly
you will get the hang of it quickly- dont worry the rocker will not jump up and bite you
this will adjust the valve lash perfectly
spray your engine compartment down with cleaner and take it to the carwash
look out for cops before you stomp on it because your engine will be way more dialed in that any other valve lash technique
third gens are the shiznezel

Re: 1/2 or 3/4 lifter preload? roller lifters
when i built the 350 for my S-10 i set them at 1/2 turn. after i drove it for a week i noticed they started to make noise at higher RPM so i added 1/4 turn and they are now nice and quiet.
