oil pouring out of the engine

I recently replaced my OPSU with a mechanical gauge and now everytime I start the car oil pours out of the back of the engine.. I removed the flexplate shield ( auto ) and the flywheel and torque converter were covered in oil. I removed the oil filter adapter plate when I removed the OPSU ( to make sure the threading was still in tact ) and there was a paper gasket. Upon checking all the parts stores AND the local Chevrolet dealership they ALL claimed that there was no gasket put there unless there was a stock oil cooler that was removed and it seems that this problem hasnt started until I put the adapter back on ( drove the car for 1 day and all was fine ) however for some reason the car runs 50psi at initial idle and over 60 when driving. any ideas?

Re: oil pouring out of the engine

If the flywheel and converter are covered in oil, I don't see how it would get there from the oil filter adapter...? I'd be much more suspicious of either the oil gallery fitting on the left (drvers) side of the distributor on the block, or one of the plugs around the cam plug behind the flywheel. Rear main seals are notorious for leaks too, but thats not under pressure, so it shouldn't just **** out like you are describing.

Re: oil pouring out of the engine

yeah I didnt figure the rear main would see the pressure and im trying to avoid dropping the trans or lifting the motor to see where its leaking from but it has to be coming from the upper end of the block. As soon as I start the car it pisses out but when I turn it back off it stops

Re: oil pouring out of the engine

according to gm and every parts place I went to there is no such gasket that goes on there and as far as the capilary tubing I checked it for leaks and nothing. its definitely coming from the back of the block

Re: oil pouring out of the engine

lol it does have **** leakage but I couldnt find a butthole. Im pretty positive that the rear main split and is spraying oil out but come tomorrow the car will be in the garage and the motor will be lifted and seperated from the tranny so I WILL find out where this leak is coming from

Re: oil pouring out of the engine

turns out there IS a gasket that goes into that oil adapter. I started the car with it raised on stands started it and watched it come out between the oil filter and the block. Ordered a new adapter WITH the gasket from summit along with a new 3 Inch universal put together exhaust system so I should be back on the road.

By "adapter" do you mean the oil cooler?

Goes to show what the parts house guys and even your average counter or phone guy at gm knows.I love it when they tell me something doesnt exsist or you cant get something.

That would be my guess. There is in fact no seal on the filter adapter that bolts to the block, there is no reason for it to have one, the oil filter gasket itself seals to the block.

Re: oil pouring out of the engine

Right, the oil filter adapter doesn't need a seal. The oil cooler needs a seal.

Re: oil pouring out of the engine

well the only answer for why its leaking would be when I pulled the part off that the oil filter screws onto ( be it adapter, cooler whatever ) there was a gasket in there and it never leaked till I removed it put it back together and it sprays out. I knw the part has a little spring in it then a cap with a channel in the top where it seems its spraying in that direction ( towards the block ) and on the other side where that spring is, is a little screen
