How much to drop the pan?

Noticed today my car is leaking oil pretty bad. Just changed the oil the other day and i noticed the pan is in really bad shape(rusted and peeling)...Yes i checked the drain plug and all that. I think i need to get a new pan just due to how bad it looks. I have no cherry picker or have i ever done this before. I have a good mechanic i trust. How much would be a fair price to have the oil pan replaced and while hes there have him change the rear main seal also? I wish these cars were as easy as some cars cause id do it in the garage(ive done it before). I just cant be pullin the motor up and all that.

Re: How much to drop the pan?

I'd just rent a cherry picker & lift the engine high enough to fix it myself. Sounds like you have the ability to. Cheaper than paying a shop & you'd know it was done right.

Re: How much to drop the pan?

Ya good point. Hmm i just saw a picker on sale somewhere too...i should have one already...but im a procrastinator. Eh ill just ask my buddy. Hopefully hes not STILL using it to put the 454 ss back together. Thanx for the quick reply. Im in that panic mode right now. Spring time is so close. Ive waited so long to drive this car. I dont want to spend time when its nice out fixing it. I saw it was leaking pretty bad and all i could think was oh great here goes another week and $300.

Re: How much to drop the pan?

I've lifted my engine using a jack and a block of wood on the front pulley. Worked pretty good.

then cut 2 2inch 2x4's and stick them between the motor mount and the clamshell

make sure you remove your dissy cap

change the $15 oil pump and rear main seal

even if you have it done in the shop

Re: How much to drop the pan?

You might also need to remove the y pipe. when i chaned my oil pump and seal i had to jack the engine with a jack and remove the y pipe, becareful for wiring and the starter when removing the bolts it gives a nasty discharge when hit with a socket wrench.

Re: How much to drop the pan?

thanx for all the info guys. You guys are life savers. So all i have to do is remove y pipe, dissy cap and unbolt motor. then jack it up 4 inchs or so. While doing this watchin for anything that might catch. Will i need to take driveshaft off? Will i need to unbolt tranny and lower that down while i jack the motor up? I just want this to be as painless and simple as possible. If i dont NEED to do something i dont want to. I dont want to replace the rear main seal if i dont have to. Is there any way to tell if its still good? Im plannin on replacin oil pan, gasket, and a new pump while im there. Rear main seal means takin the tranny off and all that which is a lil above what i want to do. Well i dont WANT to do this at all but i have to. Thanx again for the quick feedback.

Re: How much to drop the pan?

just unbolt the tranny from the mount and it will then move with the engine.

Re: How much to drop the pan?

alright well im going to bring back this thread but it is my thread so i guess thats alright. Well i ended up putting lucas oil stop leak and oil additive in there and it helped the leak alot down to just a few drops every once in a while. Well now that its been nice and ive been out and reving high every once in a while it is back to a constant drip. So im going to change this out this coming weekend. Ive found the oil pan part number. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1∂=RNB-264-122&N=700+4294924928+4294908153+4294907958+4294840055+4294925232+4294839075+4294840045+115&autoview=sku It says it doesnt come with a bunch of stuff like crank scrapper and gaskets and windage tray. Ive heard the felpro 1 piece seals are the way to go for the pan. Anyone have the part #? Also should I just buy a basic oil pump or should I get a higher flow one? What would you recomend. I mean its only a 6 but I do rev her to 5 grand when im power shifting. Also should i replace anything else there while im there?

Re: How much to drop the pan?

For a stock motor use the basic oil pump.

Autozone has a pan that looks basically the same for about 20 bucks cheaper, it is what I am using with my 2.8 (http://www.autozone.com/autozone/cat...entId=cat10008)

No idea on the seal... I bought a Felpro for 30 bucks from Autzone (again) because that is what they have. P/N is: OS34501R according to the Autozone website.

I am replacing the oil pump and pickup, my oil pan was smashed and I was worried it damaged the pickup. It's also cheap insurance.

If it's worth driving to the other side of rochester you could use my picker in my garage. If I managed to fit a gmc in there a couple months ago, I know another bird would fit. Fifty miles though. I could help but I've only changed the gasket with the engine out of the car.

Yay! No more gas leak...and I finally got a breaker bar on that O2 sensor and finally got her off after 3 attempts...now shes runnin really nice. Still need to fix the oil pan issue. Its going to be real nice this whole weekend. I think i might put my new rims on sat morning then go cruising for awhile. I cant afford the oil pan stuff till next pay check(yes i know i bought rims before a oil pan....ive been looking for gta style rims that are nice for some time now and i couldnt pass up the deal)....ill post pics of the rims on the car once i go pick them up and mount them!....im excited my car doesnt leak gas anymore tho. that was very annoying and costly!
