My car is in park. My dad accidentally put the cruise control on. I pressed the cruise control reset button and my cruise control surges to 7000 RPM red zone. I shut it off immediately. it never did that before. my idle also went up to 1500-2000 RPM
i think it could be a vacuum leak. i just had my motor mounts replaced
Check yourlines going to your vacuam canister should be around ball looking thing close to your charcol cannistermay be mounted in wheelwell towords front of car I think thats where mines at lost the first one it fell off.

I am confused with your post BTW Thanks, I will look by my Cruise Control Vacuum Diaphragm (round ball looking thingy) and it is by the charcoal canister
'82-83 has electro-mechanical cruise control. It runs off the speedometer cable, some electric switches and vacuum for the throttle cable servo. I would suspect something is wrong with the cruise control tranducer unit on the driver's side inner fender.
The is no round ball vacuum canister. That was used on the '84-up electronic cruise control.

Sorry if I confused you but you said you thought it might be a vacuam leak. I have a 91 Z28. Looking at my haynes book I tend to agre with the other guy.

what is the cruise control tranducer unit ? how do I check and fix it?
after further looking into the problem. my cruise control throttle cable has a kink in it. the problem of the RPM surging and high idle on cold start up was still there. but when I disconnected the power cable to the cruise control transducer the high idle disappeared
I think it is the cruise control transducer and i have to replace cruise control throttle cable
