This a good rebuild kit?

http://www.northernautoparts.com/Pro...tModelId=18785

Am gonna get the machine work done on the block i decided. This a good kit for my L31 motor?

Any clue on area of HP to the crank with this setup and a good 750 carb?

Goals were 400hp to crank and 100 shot down the road.

that kit doesnt show a crank and that cam is tiny for a 383, I was going to run a bigger cam in my 305 tpi fwiw

AND make sure you have your machinist balance the rotating assembly even if the kit claims "balanced".

Re: This a good rebuild kit?

ok i got a price for getting the block dipped, honed, balanced and prepped for the 383 Kit.

$675, new frost plugs, cam bearing, line boring....

Is that a decent estimate or should i start looking elsewhere. This is with me breaking the block down, they wanted $150 for taking it apart plus 1.5 hrs at $110/hr to get the block done.

I was doing some research and seen i could get a 383 forged short block for around $2200. In the long run should i get the new short block and use the L31 as a donor or just use a shop to clean up the L31?

Re: This a good rebuild kit?

Ive read numerous times line honing the mains is a very expensive waste of time. David Vizard specifically says not to do it in one of his books.

Re: This a good rebuild kit?

I went with eagle kit the one I got lists good for 500hp and got it for 750 ebay. Several diff suppliers for same price. Also have read that line bore is waste of money unless your going for 800hp and up.

Re: This a good rebuild kit?

Thx for the reply and thoughts guys.

2 more questions.

Next year (2011) am most likely gonna change the vortec heads to something different. But as of this year am just gonna use the stock vortec heads with alittle work. Is the LT4 hot cam my best choice in cams for those heads?

Also what size headers you reccommend? Am gonna run a trual dual exhaust with 2 1/4 piping side by side to the rear. Or maybe 3 1/2 single. Not sure what would be the best route,i dont want to change the exhaust if i decide to go with a bigger and aggressive cam with heads down the road.

Just remember this is not a fuel economy car, i could care less if i get 4 mpg :P this is my pre life mid crisis car as am not old enough yet for a mid life crisis as the wife told me lol
