I have a gas leak right over the rear axle, almost positive its coming from the top of the tank. Heres the questions are the fuel lines solid metal all the way to the fuel pump or do they have rubber lines connecting them to the pump/sending unit?? I don't want to drop the tank but if i got to i guess i can, but can i do it without dropping the rear as i would be doing this by myself without a lift and i've never done this before?? Any help would be great guys.
I have the same problem. Have you pulled your tank yet? Mine seems to be leaking while the car just sits. It does seem to be coming from the top. Would this just be the lines, or something else?
Check your fuel tank filler neck. They can become loose and are a potential source of leaks.

GM did have a recall, but it didn't apply to 1987. Chances are if the filler neck is leaking, it's from age, vibration, being damaged in a fuel pump change, etc. There are a bunch of lines and potential places were the fuel could be leaking. I'd start by inspecting the filler neck, and then consider dropping the tank.
Not age, but bad design causes the filler neck to leak. Pinholes at the base, around the welding.
Even cars 5-6 years old suffered leaking filler necks back in the nineties.....I know, mine did, but GM refused to cure it, because my car was privately imported into the Netherlands.....they wanted me to go to a US dealer....!!
I fixed it with "liquid" metal around the filler neck.
