Re: Choke Issues
If it is the original engine and nothing has been modified, you probably have a carburetor. If it is a Quadrajet, there is a fast idle adjustment screw that you can back out and slow down the engine. Sometimes these were controlled by and electronic dashpot where a plunger pushed on the throttle. Regardless, on a carburetor their will be some sort of adjustment. When it warms up, does the choke disengage and the car idle properly?

Good.
That's about what it's supposed to do. Spec is something like 1600 IIRC.
Glad to hear there's still some of those kicking along out there.

2000 rpm on fast idle? Sounds high to me, but I will defer to you because I don't know the spec. I always set mine lower on the old carb systems. I just didn't like that many rpm's on a cold engine.
Re: Choke Issues
I know the high idle is ok but the problem is it doesnt disengage when it first warms up. I have to warm it up and cool it down about 3 times before it fully disengages. The choke light doesnt come on anymore either when the key is turned to on position, before turning it all the way and starting it. I have another post. This one posted before i could finish writting.

Re: Choke Issues
OF COURSE it's carb; it's an HO.
Replace the bulb. It's important, more important than you might think. It's not really a "Choke" light even though that's what's printed on the gel. Rather, it's REALLY the "Alternator" light. Without it, the alt won't work right, in fact some alts won't even work at all; and even if the alt manages to work, the rest of the circuit will NEVER send 12V to the choke thermostat to warm it up and make it turn off. Which is likely why yours stays on too long.

Re: Choke Issues
There are two types of carburetors, ECM and non-ECM controlled. If it is non-ECM controlled, you still have a problem with your choke and the fast-idle setting. If it is ECM controlled, this has an electric throttle kicker or an idle solenoid. This is ECM controlled and the setting is determined by the ECM. It may be the solenoid isn't disengaging. I would seek help from someone who knows more about it than me.

Im going to be taking it to my friends dads shop either tomorrow or the next. Hes owned a couple in his life and has taken a real interest in it helping me when it was over heating. Hes proven his skills to me before.
With all the studying ive done im determined its either the solenoid/kicker

The choke thermostat is the black round thing on the passenger side. It has a single terminal on it, there needs to be a wire attached.

Re: Choke Issues
I was looking in my 1985 GM Shop Manual. These books are invaluable. I would highly recommend getting one. The best thing is to compare your car to the book. You never know what has been changed during model years or after the car rolled off the assembly line.
Re: Choke Issues
Sorry for the delay. Took off the air cleaner today and found out a mouse was living between the valve covers and the carb. I also noticed that half the clip for the wire was broken off. Its still attached but can wiggle.
What disengages the fast idle after the car is warmed up?

Spring tension and vacuum when you open the throttle to release the throttle arm from the fast idle screw.
