86 trans am help needed wont turn over
well it started out stalling at low idles it would get to around 650 rpms in gear when coasting or stopping and it would stall out.It seemed to be burning more gas than normal also and sometimes it would only stay running from a cold start with some pressure on the pedal but once it warmed up a little it would run ok then the stalling would start
it didnt ever have the ses light on
then yesterday i went into a store and came out and it wouldnt turn over at all
dont know if this helps but the 4 plug wires on the right side of the motor felt really hot after running it for a while and the ones on the left side stayed cool.
where should i start
thanks
tom

did u check for fuel pressure? did u see if it has spark?

to check for fuel pressure u can locate the schrader valve on the fuel rail but u will need a fuel pressure gauge to get the exact psi reading
to check for spark u need an inline spark tester that would go between the plug wire and plug or u could put it between plug wire and distributor cap

I have spark I replaced the ignition module and the coil still wont turn over. I hear the fuel pump turn on i will get a fuel pressure gauge tomorrow, i sprayed it with starting fluid in the throttle bottle and it kicked over real rough, i think the timing is off though.

The pickup is under the reluctor in the dizzy (reluctor is pointy thing under the rotor)

This explains the procedure even though it is for a Fiero, gives you the basics

Easier to buy a remanned dizzy
let me know what you come up with

Re: 86 trans am help needed wont turn over
no dust just very brittle connectors.and my mistake I replaced the rotor not the coil, How do I bring the engine to tdc. Also I noticed the dizzy will turn by hand with little resistance is this normal. I am sure after tinkering with it the timing is all jacked up.If my timing chain went would I still be getting spark?
Thanks for the response.....

No problem, glad to help
You would still get spark if the timing chain went put I would doubt that went without you have other serious problems
Sounds like the dizzy hold down clamp is loose, 1 bolt holds a large c clip that holds the dizzy down.
to bring the motor to TDC there are a couple different ways.
With the dizzy cap off, turn the crank with a wrench by hand. It is easier if you take off the belts. The cylinder reaches TDC twice in a cycle. You need it on the compression stroke. With the dizzy cap off but rotor on consider the firewall the 12 o'clock position, when the rotor is around the 5 o'clock position look at your timing marker, the 0 degree mark should be close to the line on the harmonic balancer. Get the mark on 0 degress at the timing marker
Now put the cap back on, loosen the dizzy hold down clamp, line up the closest post on the cap to where the rotor is pointing at it. hook up that post to your number 1 cylinder plug wire. Then snug the dizzy hold down clamp. Attach all the other plug wires in the correct firing order (any $15 manual will have the firing order and cylinder numbers)
Then if it still doesn't start you have other problems. You probably need to have your ignition module checked at a parts store to make sure it is working. If it is or isn't good make sure you put the dilectric grease on the mounting pad on installation
