The bottom of the big "V" is 0* (TDC). To the left of that every point is 4* advanced (4, 8, 12, 16 degrees advanced). To the right of the big "V" every point is 4* retarded.
So you want it between the first 2 points to the left of the big "V" for the factory/stock 6* BTDC setting.

great thanks! is 8 degrees better for performance? with high octane gas and no ping? i think thats where the timing ended up. its on the second point on left of big v

no, look at the attachment i sent. there is the center of the big v,that is 0 degrees, then the first tip from there is 4, six is the center of the next v.

your right, that is 8. i just looked at the chart. there are 3 v's total. each tip goes 4,8,then skips to 12. inbetween is 6 and 10

I have been thinking about adjusting the timing on my 92 rs by 6 degrees....i have heard rumor that it will bosst performance. Have i been lead in the wrong direction...or is this true. And it that the only adjustments i need to make...or do i need to make other adjustments along with the change in timing?

Most stock motors you can bump it by about 4* over stock spec for a bit more performance with little or no downside. MOST. Not all. Depends on the individual motor and how aggressive the original timing curve is.
It's a try-it-and-see thing. And because all these EFI motors have a knock sensor you're unlikely to ever hear any detonation like on the old carbureted engines (some of which also had knock sensors way back to the early 80s).
If you want to be scientific about it, get a scan tool and see if the knock sensor is causing timing to be pulled out. If bumping up the initial timing causes the knock sensor to start pulling out timing you're better of leaving the timing where it was in the first place. By the time the knock sensor kicks in it's gotta pull out quite a bit of timing to stop the detonation.

With the gas you want to run, advance in incriments of 2 deg untill there is pinging, then back it down. (You will have to test drive it to hear the pinging.) That will be your best advanced you can have for your engine. The higher the octane, the more advanced you can go.
