Complete engine rebuild. I need to know what engine thought :P
Ok. Im new to the whole engine thing.. I know the 383, 305 and all that, those numbers are measuring cubic inches right? Don't know how that helps me determine a good engine.
just saying this in case anyone would like to explain somewhat.
Not asking for someone to hole my hand just advice from real people.
So on to my real question I have a bored out 305 in it right now. Not sure what trans because the previous owners for sure swapped it. I have a cable driven speedo.. the trans has electronic.
Im fine with my engine. BUT.. I want to put a bigger, better engine in it over time. I would like to just buy the block.. then start rebuilding it from scratch. This is going to be an over time project of course.
I would like something to fit in there perfectly but.. its not a perfect world. I need your honest opinions on what will generate a lot of horse power, but will still be ideal for regular day use.
I also want to supercharge it. Thanks for any help

Dart SHP 400 (4.125" bore) block
3.75 stroke crank
4.125" pistons
5.7 to 6.0 rods, anywhere in that range
AFR220 72cc heads
XR282 cam
Holley Stealth Ram
You didn't say anything about a budget....
Nor did you explain what "fit in there perfectly" means. A smallblock is a smallblock and will bolt right in physically every time.

Nope.. there is no budget. So.. if you would be so kind to explain to me what all this means and what it will do that would be great.. I literally have no time to do anything im working like crazy.

Wow, I really want to thank you.. Not only does that block look awesome, I can deffffff afford the block within a month. Damn Im going to have a lot of fun with this. It may take some time but its going to be well worth it when Im dropping in my car.

I was just being facetious. While that's an excellent block and a pretty good build, there's a lot more to it... You gotta build the rest of the car to handle that kind of power too. You got a built T56 or Turbo 350? A 12-bolt or Ford 9 inch?

Isn't an ls1 engine a lot better? But I do plan on putting supercharger on it and all that after the rebuild :P

Re: Complete engine rebuild. I need to know what engine thought :P
orr80whateveriroc has a twin turbo 400 sbc car. He accidentally runs 9's in the quarter mile with it. It's never running quite right and the combo is always wrong and there's always something that needs attention according to his posts about how fast it is, but it still goes 9's. He had AFR's (I think) and a Dart 400 block. Without the turbos that kind of setup is good for 11's at least I would imagine.
LS vs 400 is gonna be a matter whether you want to pay the initial cost to convert everything over for an LSwhat drivetrain. LS is cheaper to get power out of, but more expensive to get into. You can do an LS swap for probably around $5-$8k without having to search for deals. 6 liter LS is around 370 cubic inches. a 400 is.... 400. At that point in the amount of mods and cost involved to make it work... I'd just go with the 400 if you want a carbed old school engine, and LS if you want modern fuel injection. But for that kind of money you can build a 400 with a nice aftermarket ECM Stealth Ram setup too.
It's just your call. I really suggest you do some research, pick a budget, and pick a power goal.
