VATS or starter solenoid or neither
Hey 3gen,
I lost my keys some time ago so I bypassed the ignition resistor with a homemade resistor and a toggle switch that works just fine. I recently had the car decommissioned for about 2 weeks while I was taking my time replacing the steering box. When purging the steering system of air I would crank over the engine about 5 seconds at time while while cranking the wheel from lock to lock.
When all said and done I plug in the coil and turn on the engine with no prob. I turned it off then checked the restart and no dice. I think my negative got loose so I then changed a problematic terminal and tried to restart again and still no dice.
I toggle the VATS switch on and off and what do you know it starts. I know that VATS is supposed to lock up for about 5 min if the wrong resistance is read but can't figure out why the on/off action let's it start.
I thought it was a glitch but it's been happening the last 3 times i've gone to start it. At cold start, turn VATS switch on and no crank, toggle off/on then I get a crank???
any ideas? I thought I fried the solenoid from the p/s purging but it's still working, haven't taken it off to get bench tested though.
thanks

Re: VATS or starter solenoid or neither
Duh, though I'm usually complicating the problem. Being so new with less than 50 toggles I never suspected it.
I'll short the switch and try again.
Thanks
