garage exhaust fan question
Anybody have an exhaust fan for their shop? I want to install one in my garage, and I'm wondering if 80 cfm will do it. They have a fairly cheap fan at HD, and with some dryer ducting, I'd be able to run the car in the garage with the door closed.
Wasn't really sure where else to ask this one.

Re: garage exhaust fan question
I assume you are asking this so you can retain the heat that's in the garage. A fan will not work.
Get a rubber tail pipe hose than garages use, and run it under the door that's open 3". You will save the majority of your heat that way.

Re: garage exhaust fan question
Yeah, maybe I'll just do that for now.
Retaining what little heat I do have would be nice, but as I was messing with the timing the other day after replacing the distributor, even with the garage door open, the exhaust was just going right back in.
Hence my desire to put a fan into the wall and vent it out the side. I wouldn't need hose that fits snug on the tailpipes either.

Carbon monoxide in the garage can kill you even when the door is wide open.
Use a hose instead of a fan.

I use a bue blower
If its nice outside I have one blowing in from the regular door or window and the other out the garage door
If its cold I shut my garage door down almost all the way and have 1 fan blowing out, but I also have enough heater to make the garage a sauna

Re: garage exhaust fan question
I have a dryer exhaust in the wall with a crush proof tube. Fan won't do it on its own, if you run for any more than a few seconds you will get significant CO buildup, even a few lungfuls is bad for you and the progression to disorientation, drowsiness and death is much more rapid than you think. The first symptom of CO poisoning is poor judgement, goes bad quick from there.

Re: garage exhaust fan question
I will be using hoses (dual exhaust) regardless, and would like to route them through a hole in the side wall.
I'd just prefer attaching them to a fan (so the fan is sucking air through the hoses) to help move the exhaust outside, and be able to use a hose that simply fits loosely over the exhaust tip, so I can use it for my truck or quad too.
I can keep the garage door closed, and open the man-door slightly (on the opposite side of the garage) to let fresh air in.
I'm just curious what cfm is sufficient. Cost is an issue, hence the consideration of a household vent fan, dryer hose, cardboard and tape.
Like what stealtht/a mentioned.

Re: garage exhaust fan question
If you make the hoses fit snug over the tailpipes you wont need a fan, that would keep cost down. All you would need is the hoses and run them to dryer vents. 80cfm fan wont come close to bein enough.

Re: garage exhaust fan question
They make metal ports with flap doors on them that go into your garage door to hook hoses too
Maybe an big exhaust fan in a window to get out any remainder of fumes u should be ok
A co2 ditector would-be a good idea too
