Problem with gas being sucked through vent line

Alright guys, I can't seem to pinpoint this problem. Before I put the car away for storage it started to suck gas into the evap canister. I just put a new canister purge valve on today and drove it back home. Didn't have any problems. Let it sit in the garage for a little while and when I came back home there was gas all over the floor coming from the canister, great. I removed everything from the can and started the car and gas started coming out the end of the purge valve that goes into the can. If there's no vacuum hooked up to the evap system what the hell is drawing gas up this line? I took the fuel cap off and there seemed to be a lot of pressure in the tank. It hissed quite a bit until I got the cap all the way off.

I'm swapping cams this spring and I would really like to figure this out so I can actually enjoy my new cam this summer.

Anybody else have this problem?

87 Formula, TPI.

I should also mention that I replaced the fuel sending unit in the fall and I'm 98% positive none of the lines got swapped. My fuel lines are at the top of the tank so they have to be reconnected via hoses. After I swapped the sending units I drove it for maybe 70 miles with no issues at all. Just one random day in the fall when I was driving it around this started. If the lines were swapped some how then I imagine that this would have started right a way after the sending unit swap. I'm at a loss.

I would say your vent is clogged since it had pressure. I can't remember where it routes to from the tank but its under the back around the tank. Maybe somebody else will chime in that can tell you better.

You're talking about the actual gas tank vent right? Not the line that runs into the engine bay to the canister? Sometimes I call the canister line the vent line but I do believe there is an actual vent tube for the tank. I think it goes up along the fill tube.

Yes, the actual pressure release valve. It's in the pic above, it does not go up along with the fill tube

K, I know exactly where that is. I'll see if I can find one here local at a parts store.

Re: Problem with gas being sucked through vent line

Alright, I got my old one out and I think it's broken. The spring inside of it isn't tight and the valve that moves the spring is all rusty and doesn't move. I can't seem to find this part ANYWHERE on the internet. Does anyone have a part number this stupid thing?

Got the GM part number from one of my local dealers but I'll be damned if I can find this thing anywhere.

Re: Problem with gas being sucked through vent line

I just cleaned mine and blew through it and it opened up, or "purged". I'm going to check to see if my vent line is clogged. That's the only other thing I could think of that would be causing this issue. I'll report back.
