pulling the engine
Quick question. I'm about ready to pull the 305 out of my car. 91 TPI w/5spd. I'm having issues with the torx bolts that hold on the alt/PS bracket and figured it would be easier to deal with once on the engine stand. My question for anybody who has pulled the motor only (trans staying in the car) have you run into any clearance issues with leaving any of the accessory brackets on the engine?

Re: pulling the engine
Thanks Rusty. This started with valve seals. Then I found an intake gasket leak,a rear main leak, then a timing cover leak, and so on and so on.... I threw in the towel on trying to fix all of this with the engine in the car. So I already have dizzy and intake out. Those top 4 bolts still seem like they are going to be a royal pain to get too even with everything out of the way. If GM would have moved the engine 1/2 further forward things would be much easier.

Re: pulling the engine
I use a 6 inch 14 mm wrench. it works best for those top 4 bolts.and since you have it out ,drop the oil pan and inspect your main and rod bearings, oil pump too.better to find a problem now than AFTER you put it back in!

Re: pulling the engine
For the bell-housing bolts, from underneath with the cross-member removed I lower the trans, expose bolts, and use air ratchet with long 3/8 drive extensions with a 9/16 swivel socket. Piece of cake...

Re: pulling the engine
Well the dizzy and intake are already off the car (intake leak)...so it looks like the top bell-housing bolts are pretty easily accessible without having to remove the trans cross member.

Re: pulling the engine
You can leave the motor completely dressed minus headers and pull it out the top in a few hours if you do the bell housing bolts from underneath.
