Can anyone give me some pointers of how to get the starter past the ypipe on a 88 Iroc? Ive read they will come out but cant seem to see how.

Really would love to see a video but I know thats asking a bunch. But if its out there that would be great.

Removing the Ypipe really isnt a option. It will break the bolts in the manifolds.

Sorry I know this has probably been asked before. But I couldnt find anything that gave more then "It comes out"

I've changed the starter on all three of my birds and the '88 even has headers. Didn't have to disconnect the y-pipe. Disconnected my battery, jacked it up as high as I could, and placed jack stands safely around the area. I ratcheted the the nuts that I could get off the solenoid, then removed the retaining bolts to dislodge the starter, tilted the starter downward, and removed the remaining nuts off the solenoid. Then tilted the starter forward of the y-pipe and it dropped through. Replacement was just the opposite.

It takes Some wiggling and rearranging for it to come through the opening. Just keep playing with it and adjusting until it fits through. Just make sure you have a firm grip on it at all times. my dad busted his lip open when he was changing one out on a truck, fell right onto his lip since he didn't expect it to come out so easily

You have to take the solenoid off the starter while its still up. Get the starter off the engine, while dangling unscrew the solenoid and pull it off. The starter will then fall right through. I posted exactly how to do it on this site. Just search for "starter tip"..

I am not looking for a fight , nor am I pointing fingers exclaiming "your wrong" , so don't take this that way ,

But ,

I have owned 2 different eight cylinder and one six cylinder third gen Firebirds , I put at least one starter in each , and I never took the solenoid off any of them . The 6 was just as hard as the 8s are , and there is a "sweet spot" that if turned just right it will drop out without disassembling the solenoid .

Is it easier to remove the solenoid ? Very likely so . But it's not a 100% requirement if you twist and turn it enough to find the one position that'll allow it to drop out .

Changed mine without taking it apart, stock pipes at the time. Tricky, but it will come out, and make sure to note how it came out so you can get the new one in the same way.
