Looking for some advice on my 305 tpi.

I passed a friends camaro and he had the windows down. I gave it some good throttle and he said when I passed it smelled like straight gas. And I noticed it when I idle a long time, but I especially noticed when I reved it in park. No noticeably poor fuel economy, ses only comes on on start up due to the egr and blow by on cold starts. Doesn't blow any smoke. I'm pretty sure the cat is toast though, would that cause the smell? No noticeable leaks. The smell is more prevelant when warm

Check the Fuel filler tube to tank connection for leaks, and the tank vent valve on drivers side by the tank.
Search for:

10029752
alt 10033125
alt 10245442

which are different partnumbers for basically the same vent.
It is often missing or broken.

I will look at the fuel filler neck! Thank you for those part numbers! If it turns out to be that vent, will it cause any other trouble if I don't replace it?

I dont know. Im thinking maybe its a bit dangerous to have fuel evaporate from the tank(fire hazard?''). Maybe You will loose a small amount of fuel, idk.
I replaced the vent and got rid of the smell. There is now a slight surge when opening the filler cap, which is how its supposed to be. The vent is 2-way, opening when You have spent some fuel driving, to relieve the underpressure, but also opening to relieve pressure build-up if needed.
My native language is swedish, but I hope my words make sense.
I didnt have any driving issues without a working vent, just the fuel smell.

Did this end up working out for you? Same problem with my 88 TBI 305

Hello,
Well You really need a working tank vent, and the smell is almost gone. There has still been some fuel smell during really hot days, but just a few times. I also replaced all the hoses going to and from the canister, to the throttlebody and the valve leading to the evap system(its connected to a metal pipe leading to the tank and a little hard to reach).
So replace hoses and fuel vent valve, it definitely helps!

Ive had this problem and fixed it replacing those hoses to the canister and replacing the canister itself.
