Starter Replace Help
Hey everyone I'm back again. After just redoing my headgaskets a problem has arisen. My starter failed. So I jacked up my car, had a friend drive me to advanced auto and low and behold I noticed the Y pipe is in the way. Okay no big issues right? Wrong. Those bolts are nasty, rusted so bad I don't see the threading anymore. I know for a fact if I move those they're going to shatter. So I did some research. "Just tilt the nose down and you can get the starter out without removing the y pipe" Surprisingly that worked amazingly. But now I cant get the new one back in! I spent 6 hours trying to get that PITA back in to no avail. I was wondering if any of you guys have any tips or tricks to get it back in without removing the y pipe that you all will be willing to share. Thanks in advanced! And if not I'm soaking those bolts in PB overnight, praying, and hoping for nothing short of a miracle.

Re: Starter Replace Help
I just replaced my son's starter on his 1991 Z28. Buy a starter for a 1995 Z28, they are smaller, torquier and fit right in. A lot of the guys here do this. I followed their lead and it's an excellent upgrade and I believe I paid less for the newer one.

^^^Beat me to it, and excellent advise hahaha
I've never had to remove the Y-pipe. If the old one came out the new one can go in, just gotta keep fighting with it till it gives.
Also I don't know if your replacement is the same huge OEM starter, but you can use a smaller LT1 starter. I usually just ordered one for a 95 LT1, they're smaller and less prone to heat soak, and go in a lot easier.

Re: Starter Replace Help
Thanks for the advice, did you have to do any modifications to the starter you bought or did it just fit right in no questions ask?

Re: Starter Replace Help
So I tried turning her over, I turn the key and all the lights in the car turn off. I go and turn the key again and everything's normal I just her a click. So I try a couple more times and just hear clicks, I even tried with my car being jumped and nothing. Now it doesn't even click. Anyone have any ideas ?
EDIT: the starter will click if I short it with a screw driver. The thick positive wire has 36v the singular wire has 2,5 volts and the one with two connected has .8 volts

Re: Starter Replace Help
How did the head gasket job go? Just wondering from the previous post you had up here about it. Were you able to get some help? The wire directly off the battery has 36v? The battery only has 12, I'm trying to understand it.

Re: Starter Replace Help
It went surprisingly well I ended up having a friend help me out and we banged it out in two days . And oddly enough my multimeter told me 36 volts, I was confused by it too. Ill do another check in the morning then tell you again

Re: Starter Replace Help
I would not trust that multimeter hahaha. Check your connections at the battery, and your block to chassis grounds. Also check that the wires at the starter are making good contact, those ring connectors have tabs on them that can get in the way, the bolt will be tight but not making good contact.

Re: Starter Replace Help
Well my mulitmeter is deciding it wants to work today the positive wire from the battery is reading 12.5v and while being jumped 13.9 so that's fine. I disconnected all the wires to see if my starter solenoid wire is getting power when i turn the key. the odd thing is when I turn the key, all the power in the car goes it, which inclines me to believe my battery was being grounded throught the starter instide of at the firewall. Thoughts? also I was going to take off the ground clean it and put it back in but oddly enough the screw fell somewhere in my car and I cant find it now. Does anyone know what size that one is?

Re: Starter Replace Help
I would be looking at the fusible links off the main power distribution on the starter. Not that I think they're burned out or anything, but if they aren't making solid contact they can cause that symptom.

Re: Starter Replace Help
Currently having the same issue, exactly as stated above. What fusible links? I looked down there and didn't see any fusible links.. Which scares me lol

Re: Starter Replace Help
I believe the color of the wire is orange and you'll see a white cylindrical looking piece on it, that's the fusible link holder. You have to open that up to check the link.

Re: Starter Replace Help
To test a fusible link, probe the cable after the fusible link, and check continuity through it entirety.

Re: Starter Replace Help
Nothing yet, I had to go for the weekend, so today so far has been the only day Ive been able to work on it. Managed to fix that stupid purple wire. I guess when i was fighting with the OEM starter I nicked the wire. My battery is dead though. I'm going to be able to jump it later then I'll get back to everyone
