Car dies when put into gear. please help.
My car died suddenly while driving last night. I figured out that it was the ignition control module as I have replaced them before. But since I have replaced that and got the car running again, the car dies whenever its up to temperature. But only when its in drive/reverse. it'll idle just fine all day long in park or neutral. I took out the IAC and cleaned it but other than that i am pretty stuck.

i had this exact problem years back, i was in complete denial that the iac needed to be replaced, even bench tested it and seemed ok. after so long dealing with it dying while putting it in gear i went ahead and replaced the iac valve and it never did it again, i attributed it to being and old iac that didn't have fast enough reaction time to adjust the idle for the gear change. there is a table in the ecm that has different iac positions for park/nuetral and gear position. i would just throw a new iac at it, they are fairly cheap.

Not a bad idea to just go ahead and change it. i did pull it off and clean it, but it didnt seem to change the car any so ill just have to go ahead and change it. Ill let you know how it works.
Also i tested the 02 sensor and its saying that its stuck on dead lean but the car is running really rich so i think a bad 02 sensor could also be a problem.

Here are a couple threads on the same thing. Read them and see if anything you have not checked
Maybe try this one
If your transmission has overdrive, it sounds like the torque converter is locking up. Locate the blue square 4 pin electrical connector on the transmission, (this is for the overdrive) unplug it. Now start your car, put it into gear and see if it dies. If it doesnt die, thats your problem. You should be able to drive it to the shop like that, you just wont have overdrive. Hope this helps.....
