Re: fuel tank sender unit Carby no pump in tank type

I used one for an 88 and extended the pickup tube with fuel hose. From what I have seen, this is the only option.

Yeah I'm about to do the same thing, the actual units are basically impossible to find.

Re: fuel tank sender unit Carby no pump in tank type

if you do extend the pickup pipe, and join the pipe with a rubber hose, and 2 clamps make sure its an in tank rubber piece of rubber that will not fall apart in fuel..

many rubber types will melt over time in fuel,,, efi hose wont.
just a thought.

Re: fuel tank sender unit Carby no pump in tank type

I would imagine you could use a fuel line compression fitting and do it all w metal line. This way you don't have to worry about the rubber degrading and not being in the best spot.

it's a bummer, I literally just tossed the one from my 82 4 weeks ago it was original but in great shape.

Re: fuel tank sender unit Carby no pump in tank type

my car was bought to Australia in 1983/84 and changed to right hand drive.

the people used to do 1 good conversion, show the government and get accreditation to do more. every car after about the first 110 were crappy cut corners conversions.
as long as tthe cars drove and looked correct they sold easy.
20 years later the crappy conversions would start to fall apart, dodgy wireing, dodgy everything.
my car i bought in 1999, looked good but the wireing was a mess,
i finished up changeing the entire harness and gauges.

fuel gauge is vdo germany,, premium units like porsche use,, now i need tank unit to match.
i bought a 1987 fuel pump intank pickup, cut it and modified it to accept the different sender unit and my calculations were a little out,,, gauge is readsing out.

so i will need another unit AND this time i will send the VDO fuel gauge and entire tank unit to a propper instrument fitter to get it all matched up. yes i will extend the pipe like i did on the first attempt.

you can buy the 82 carby units but at over $320 its a bit wild. ,

Here's an old thread on how this was solved.
Carb gas tank pickup - Third Generation F-Body Message Boards
I had the same problem, but elected to just install a pusher pump like the L69 equipped cars.
