2 fuel pumps?

Anyone ever hear of 2 fuel pumps on a carbed motor? I have a mechanical one on the motor and I just dropped the tank yesterday and found the fuel sending unit has an electric pump attched to it also. Sending Unit(FEH) is original and has 3 wires in the harness.I was told previously that a carbed motor wouldnt have an electric pump in the tank and bought a used sending unit based on that information. WTF?

Yes, GM added a pusher pump in the gas tank to help with vapor lock mainly on HO engines. Some 83's and 84's could have them added by the dealer and I think later years got them from the factory.

Re: 2 fuel pumps?

Thanks for the reply. I guess I will be sending the original one out to be refurbished. I have to buy a new tank also. I tried forcing air into the tank to reform it but it didnt work as well as I thought it would. It's a little confusing because the tank made for an in tank fuel pump has a larger opening for the sending unit than one w/o the tank unit. The used sending unit I bought from a thirdgen member does not have the fuel pump on it but still fits on the old tank. See the pics.

Re: 2 fuel pumps?

My 85 IROC w/TPI had it in the tank also, but it did not have a mechanical one on the motor. I was suprised to find the L69 had both pumps.

I'm confused about what you're saying here. I don't have a particularly large personal database, but I was of the understanding that all 3rd gen tanks have the same size opening.

That would be consistent with my understanding.

FWIW, I've got a used tank in great condition (California) car available. It is a non-electric-pump version, but as you observed, the pick-up with the pump should fit in it.

Re: 2 fuel pumps?

Thanks 57, but I think I found a tank. While I was shopping for a tank I was consistantly asked if the car was carbed or FI. When I asked what the difference was I was told the FI sending unit pump would not fit into the hole on a tank made for a sending unit w/o a pump. I have not seen another tank other than the one I pulled from my car, and I wanted to avoid ordering the wrong tank. You could be correct that all the tanks have the same size opening. I just want to avoid getting the wrong one if thats not the case.
