Can I beat a Toyota Prius....

...on my bike. No, not motorcycle....just a plain ol' ten speed. I mean hell, 0-60 in just under 11 SECONDS!!!! What is the 1/4 mile time??? damn near a minute???

But seriously, there is a kid around my campus with a newer model Mustang GT. He sounds like he MIGHT have exhaust, but he is always parading around like he is the hottest thing goin. So do you think I could take him in my car? (Specs listed below). I know I will have to manually shift it cuz first gear is over in a fraction of a second in OD (haven't tried drive yet). The car pulls pretty hard so far, so I can't wait to catch him at a light.

Prius wins vs 10 speed. 0-60 in anything will beat you because you will never reach those speeds. Now 0-20 might be a race.

You should have no problem with the Stang if your Vortech headed 350 is in tune won't even need the N2O

Car: 1999 Chevy Cavalier
Engine: 2.2
Transmission: 5 speed
Axle/Gears: it's part of the transmission
Why would you race with the shifter in OVERDRIVE?

let's clear something up:

your transmission has four speeds

Overdrive is the highest gear (i.e. 4th gear) and will provide reasonable fuel milage at speeds of 45mph and up.

when the shifter is in OD, the trans will strive for that 4th gear....yes, it will go throguh all three gears before it, but as you realized already, not in a 'performance oriented' way.

DON't ever shift into OD with your foot into the gas, let off slightly and push it up and let it catch...then get back into it.....by this time, the race should be overwith anyways.

LEAVE the shifter in DRIVE, this is the position where the transmission moves between the first three gears in the most effective way. It will wind out if you want it to, also, let of the gas, slightly for a firmer shift....makes the trans last longer too.

as far as the 1st and 2nd position or 'manual shifting'...just don't even use those. there is no need, there is a reason they call it an 'automatic' transmission.

Thats interesting... Maybe your transmission is broken junkyard dog... There is no difference between having the lever in D or OD (just OD will shift into fourth, and the overrun clutch is off, so you get more engine braking)... There IS higher line pressure when you have the shifter in manual 1st or 2nd so you might see better shifts if you started in manual 1st... So the only benefits would be seen by shifting to manual 1st or 2nd...

You should be able to leave it in OD with no ill effects (you might want to manually hold a gear though if your governer isn't properly calibrated)...

I also don't understand the logic in letting off of the throttle before the transmission shifts.. How can letting off the throttle and reducing line pressure in the trans create a firmer shift??

My advice would be that if your transmission isn't working right, there's a reason.. Fix it..

In OD the converter locks at different points, and behaves differently than in Drive.

Yes, I know this, I've tried it. Although my car isn't the best car to use as a constant, I DO know my car, as well as my dads truck, both of my sisters cars, and all of my friends cars run slightly quicker when the shifter is in D. The converter behaves differently.

We're talking about WOT though, which has little (hopefully) to do with any converter lockup...
