89 IROC vs 89 Cougar XR-7

My friend's brother has an 89 Mercury Cougar XR-7 with I believe it is the s/c 3.8L V6. I have been looking all over to find stock hp and tq specs and/or 0-60 and 1/4 mile times but to no avail. He's always talking crap about how it could beat my car listed in my sig. Just curious. I don't think he'll ever get around to racing me because the car was flooded and has some drivability issues, but if it did....

i think the xr7 is a v8 not sure though

my parents have a v6 3.8 1988 LS with 77k on it and you cant even get the wheels to cherp unlesss you try some powerbreaking and all...... its a dogg......... once it gets going its not that bad ..... sounds like its gonna break when it revs high ....... i raced my friends tiburon from a 20mph roll in it and i got the reaction better jumped a tiny ahead but then he started gaining and put a car and a half on i let off at about 70 btw it was a 150hp 1998 tibby with a cone airfilter lol

i dont think you should have a problem at all the cars are heavy as ****

I think the 89+ xr7 was available in a supercharged 3.8 V6 (very different from the N/A 3.8) or a V8 (5.0 then later a 4.6). The Cougar was the same as the T-bird. The supercharged cars with a manual tranny are pretty quick, autos have more of a highway gear.

Look up the specs for an 89+ Thunderbird SC. That will give you an idea of what they are capable of.

I wouldn't get too cocky. Supercharged 3.8s are NOT dogs. Your biggest advantage is weight difference, but that's probably just about it.

If his car is all messed up from water damage and isn't tuned however, you'll own him.

Yeah it has a manual (6 speed I think, not sure though) and is stock. Glad to here I have a good chance. I'll look at the thunderturd sc and see what they weigh and put out powerwise and compare. BTW the problem with that car is something the ford dealership couldn't figure out, and my friend thinks he can fix it(he is going to an automotive school). It surges or something like that. Oh well. Thanks for the replies guys.

be careful, my parents used to have a cougar, they had a 96 though, and I raced a few 305s with it, and won a race or two.

Those supercoupe motors are pretty awesome. I also have a '96 V6 so I was looking into a swap, and those motors have some solid stats. All forged bottom end with the Eaton M-90 supercharger. They can run with most GT's stock but are easily modified with a smaller supercharger pulley. Dont sound like he has one though. I found several videos of one beating rx-7's and vipers so there nothing to screw with. but you should have him if you get a good launch.

stock were anywhere from 210 - 230 hp, around 315 tq

later,
Steve

So you know it's a 5 speed and not a 6. The 89/90 xr7's had the s/c motor. They would usually run low 15's with a decent driver. The 3.8 sc respond pretty well to mods though, there are a lot of really badass ones out there. The stock exhaust on them is junk and they get pretty good power gains just from replacing that. Go to http://www.sccoa.com if you want to read up on them at all before you race him.
