I was going to Philly on saturday and a 4.6 stang rolled up next to me. I didn't know if he wanted to mess around so I didn't think anything of it. Then I noticed a little black smoke out of his tailpipes and I knew it was on. We were doing about 70 when this happened and I punched it. I smoked him all the way up until 105 mph. I personally don't think this should have happened. I would have thought he had a better top end than me, but I guess not.

I would have thought so too until you told me other wise, lol. The 4.6's are pretty good on the top from my experiances. Nice Kill.

Is it not a 287 the 4.6L?
It is noting like the old 289's. This one has dual overhead cams and all those others things, lol. They have a pretty good top end charge.

I tryed racing one on the highway and lost horribly. Not that my car is fast or anything. Especially on the highway. It was 99 or newer GT. Ive been beaten worse by SS ls1 on the highway.

i blew away a 99 mustangGT conv. on the freeway from 70-110mph with stock heads, tpi, and mild cam on a 383. All he had was a flowmaster catback.

the DOHC 4.6L is reserved for the Cobra. the 4.6L in the GT Stang is a SOHC design

Yea I was about to say it had to be a SOHC GT cause the only way your car would beat a DOHC Cobra is if he was on a tow truck. Not trying to say your car is weak, but those cobras are hella fast.

Steve

Let me bust in with my superior mustang knowledge. The 4.6 is 281c.i. with a 3.55 bore and a 3.55 stroke. There is also a 5.0 Modular being made now with a 3.70 bore and the stock 3.55 stroke. Thats probably what I'm gonna build for my Mustang unless I decide for the 5.9 Modular stroker.

Later,
Steve

Build the 5.9 and be done with it. Eventually I will put a 5.4 in my 99 GT, I just have so much that needs to be done elsewhere first. They are also making "stroker" kits for the 4.6's now to boost them up to 5.0 as I couldn't decide to get a kit like that, or to get the 5.4 and be done with it.

The 5.9 Strokers seem really nice to me. All forged and I can run it with DOHC and have a killer top end with the endless torque of the 5.9 Now thats a Camaro killer. (sorry guys)

It sounds like you have a plan, I just can't wait until i can get my full exhaust for my car and clutch, which should be soon now that I am employed once again!! but, yes, I think go with the 5.9 and be done with it as I am also leaning that way (well, close anyway at the 5.4)

"Superior" my a$$!

OK, so you are the only one so far to get the english to metric engine displacement correct. But, I base my previous statement on another thread where you incorrectly stated the HP ratings of the various SN95 V6 cars. You DO NOT have 170HP from the factory. Subtract roughly 30HP and you'll be in the ballpark. The 98 is the same as the older cars, and only in 99 with the redesign did they get the upgraded 3.8L The difference is easy to tell. Look at the intake. The newer "crossram" style intake made a huge difference, along with other misc engine revisions. Regardless, the better of the 3.8s only makes 190HP.

On a side note, I've done so many headgasket/engine replacement jobs on cars like yours I don't keep count. So I've driven more than my fair share with the engine in good working order and in good tune. They in no way will perform like you claim. High 16s at best.

It's one thing to come on to a Camaro site and talk trash with a V8 Mustang. But a early 3.8L Stang? Get your head checked.

And how did you sell your thirdgen 4 days into the future?

To the original poster... Do you know which Stang you ran? The older 4.6 style or the newer 99+ "retro" cars. BIG difference there If you toasted one of the newer cars:

It was a 94-98 stang. Pretty sure it was closer to 94 too, it didn't look too new.

Why bother trying to identify a Stang from its taillights? You'll never see them
