85 IROC VS 86 VETTE
Hey guys I have my 85 Iroc with the 350/ 290horse crate and most of the free mods. I have 3.42 gears. My girls uncle wants to race me in his 86 vette its all stock besides cat back. It's an auto so I think I should be able to edge him out up to about 100 or so. What do u guys think?

Yeah I'll definatly let u know when it happens. It runs pretty good, its got 145000 miles on it and it barely gets driven. I don't think hes that good of a driver though cause he's lost to a couple of 5spd 5.0's and he says that it just smokes the tires every time he launches. When I get a real good launch my car takes off like a bat outta hell. Thats where I think I should definatly have em.

Didnt the 86 vettes only have like 205 hp. If your making in the ballpark of 290 hp your gunna take him good. You should be in the low 14s high 13's. I cant see an 86 auto vette there.

Well hes running tpi, and those are crank numbers, so your prob making around 220rwhp, 320 rwtq and a wieght of 3500 lbs
depending on which gears the vette has (he could have 2.56), he is putting down similar numbers +-15 hp and weights about 3200. it will be close.

From what I read they are like 230hp, and 330tq. And with 20 years and 145000 miles I don't think its all still there. I think they were like low to mid 14's stock.

You never know, with that many miles, the rings are so loose there is alot less friction on the motor, and the heads may be carboned up to where he may be running quite a bit higer compression. It might still be all there

Do u think I'm close to 3500lbs? My car has no powers at all, no t-tops, and I ripped the ac out. Its like a bare bones Iroc. Just wonderin what u think though cause I'm hopin to bring that weight down some more.

all TPI powered Vettes were pretty much the same hp/tq wise regardless of what the actual rated figures are. my old 89' auto Vette went 13.9 at 99mph with a 2.0 60ft. the car was 100% stock. i did a flowmaster catback next and gained a solid tenth and 1mph (13.8 at 100mph)
however, from the description of "when he launches it, it just smokes the tires" it sounds like he doesnt know how to launch effectively and just floors it off the line, so i give the win to you. with TPI, if you screw up the launch, your... um... screwed

3500 sounds about right with you in it.

86 vettes were the first year to come with the aluminum heads (all convertibles had em and later coupes) They were no 2.56 gears. You mean 2.59. L98 vettes should run mid to low 14s stock form. And weigh around 3200lbs with no driver. I think it should be a close race if the vette is fully tuned and running healthy.

my car had 131k when i bought it. it wasnt driven all that much and it was a florida car! 3.5 years later it has 153K. thats 22K miles in almost 4 summers. which is only the time i drive, during nice spring days which are few, nice summer days, and nice fall days. so thats around 6300 miles a year so far. first two summers it seen about 7k cuz of school. now last summer it seen 5300miles, and now its less than 5K every year from here on out. it doesnt get driven all that much and runs like a champ for 153K miles
so for older cars like that, 140-160K miles might seem like alot but its really not if it was well maintained

What are the cam specs on the "290 hp" crate motor? I believe it has heads pretty similar to the iron L98 heads on the stock 350 TPI Fbodies, so if the cam is not particularly good with stock TPI junk on top that 290 hp could be unrealistically high. I'm betting the two cars are actually very similar engine output wise, in which case it will come down the launch and the gearing difference...

* Since peak HP occurs above the TPI operating range, and you have stock exhaust, I'd bet that engine is producing probably 50HP LESS than advertised in your application.
Drivers race...
