Need help, 87 305TPI

Hey all yall...

I am looking at getting an 87 IrocZ with the 305TPI and 4 speed auto.

I am planning on pulling the engine as soon as I get it so i can freashen it up a little...and I have some ideas, but I wanted to know what you guys would do? Money will be tight but I will have some...

What are some things I can do to help freshen up the motor?

Once I hear some of your suggestions I'll post mine.

Thanks for any help!

We need your ideas first along with how much money you want
to spend.

ok, I was thinking

I've heard an LT1 Cam helps, gasket match port and polish the head, siamiase (I can't spell that) the intake...and possibly a nitrous setup...I MAY have $1000 to spend after I buy the car...let's just say I have $1000 so I can hear what you guys think I can do with that.

Thanks for any help!!!!

$1000... hmmmm. Leave the motor in the car unless its leaking badly or something. If you're going for bang for the buck, buy a $500 nitrous kit, and some used headers and catback for another $4-500. Maybe use anything left on some lil goodies. Of course this is all after a complete tuneup and diagnostic check! You should be running then.

*Honestly.... $1000 doesn't go very far in these cars. I have almost $4000 in my 350, 6-spd, and rearend, and its all pretty basic still. Plus the $6000 I bought this thing for.... holy **** I have too much money in this thing LOL

Yea buddy. $1000 gets you nowhere. Do as many cheap mods as
you can, coil, wires, plugs, 1.6 rocker arms. Then pull the intake
and port match everything and siamese the base. Get a set of
350 injectors and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and put
it all back together. Next move to the exhaust. Headers would be
nice but a least get a good cat back system. Next would be the
rear end. If it don't have a posi, get one. Once it is all back up
and running, get someone to help you set the fuel pressure using
a scanner to watch the engine.

This may take you over your $1000 a tad, but should make a
decent combo for the money spent.

thanks, I hadn't thought about some of that stuff...it does hav posi, so that's good...I just want something that will beat a few of the imports/stangs that run around here in Memphis...once I get a new motor built (hopefully within a year, 383 or 400ci) I don't think I'll have to worry about many imports or stangs...

There is one civic around here running a 11.5 that I would LOVE to be able to beat...but I KNOW I am going to have to wait until I get the built motor to take him on.

keep the ideas coming...if it's over $1000 then that's ok...I'm just trying to get ideas!

I have an 87 305 A4 IROC so I'll speak from my experiences here.

First thing to do is throw away the stock cam because, to be perfectly honest, it's ****! Port out your intake the best you can but if you are going to add nitrous I wouldn't siamise the base as I read somewhere that it can cause uneven distribution of the nitrous. There is a tech article explaining how to port the 305 heads, have a look at that. A set of headers and an exhaust would give it some more **** and ***** too.

With all of that you would get a nice gain and if you can do the work yourself you should be able to do that for around $1000.

thanks for the heads up about the nitrous...yeah I'm planning on doing everything myself...(well with the help from Black 91 Z28, David)

If I can get something that will hang with all the import **** here around Memphis until I can get another motor built then I'll be happy....anyone else have suggestions?

Dunno bout your prices... and what you want... but if you want power.. do the heads.

Around here, $300 will get you new bronze guides, everything freshened up on them and a good port/polish job. A compitition valve job will run ya about $100 also.

Make yourself a cold air intake. Buy a good muffler like flowmaster or something. Get headers. (used will prolly run ya $200)

Finally get yourself a bigger cam(something cheaper) and definetely go full roller rockers (about $120-$150)

850 w/o cam (estimate) and if you find a cheap cam kit for near 150 (good luck)... youd be in business....

You should also get the intake ported and polished at a machine shop. If you have a die grinder you could do it yourself if you have an idea on what to do. Should consider getting the block bored and honed. Couldn't hurt. Just giving ya options.

If you are interested, I have a Torker II cam with the lifters for sale. PM me or email me and lemme know if you are interested.

Car: 1987 IROC-Z28
Engine: 383 Vortec - carb
Transmission: T56 - 6speed
Exhaust is most important next to the cam.

Definately do some headers. A few guys in my club (including me) run dynomax shorties. They were like $150 new and they fit fine on 3 cars so far.(and 2 different sets of heads on my car alone) They don't come with a Y-pipe so you'd have to have one custom made(cost me $100.) and if you can't do a full cat-back then at least get a good muffler or a cut-out. That cam is going to breath a lot more air and you'll need the exhaust to keep up with it, and to get the full benefit of the cam.
It sounds so much better too.
