Scan tool - what do you guys recommend?

Have a TPI 406 in my K5 Blazer and want/need a scanner to monitor the motor. My engine builder has a Snap On scanner that monitors everything, and I want something similar. Not sure on the Snap On price, but having spent many years buying Snap On tools, I KNOW it can't be cheap. Great stuff but way spendy.

So what do you guys recommend? Want the same basic capabilities as the Snap On. Don't want just a 'code reader' but something that tells me the TPS volts, etc.

Thanks in advance.

Diacom, or Craig Moate's software if you have the '165 ECM. AutoX-ray (or whatever it's called) has a nice stand-alone scan tool if you don't want to buy/use a laptop...

if i were buying one to use on OBD 1 and OBD 2 cars and that i would actually use it i'd consider Snap-on. for ocassional use auto x ray gets mentioned a lot. you can buy diacom softwear and run it on a lap top. i bought a OTC monitor 2000 at a swap meet for cheap and it does quite bit but is limited on 93 or older cars.

OK, for a handheld, what is the consensus here? Have a laptop but would prefer a handheld scanner.

Thanks!

The AutoX-ray is probably your best bet for a hand-held scan tool, unless you have the big bucks for a Snap On scanner. You can get Diacom from here:

http://www.auto-ware.com/software_index.htm

No, you can't use it to program your own chips. The software to actually program chips will come with the burner. The software to change the tables and such w/in the program (bin) you can get from TunerCat, GMEPro, or use WinBin for free.
