MAF Problem, need help!

OK, every now and again when I start my car, it'll run for a second and then crap out. It'll only stay running when i hit the gas but then it craps out when I let off the gas.
Every now and again, a Code 34 comes up.
What's causing this?

It's on an '89 ASC GTA, L98

Before you get a new MAF sensor!!!!!!! Replace the MAF relay located on the drivers side firewall... should be the middle one. I had the same problem, but my car actually stayed running, barely though. The relay is a common problem on the TPI. Its a lot cheaper than 400bux for a MAF sensor. Go to the dealer and pick the relay up

Thanks! Unfortunately someone messed up the bracket, so I have a bunch of relays sitting there. Does anyone have a part number for the power relay?
The burnoff relay wouldnt cause that would it?

There are three relays on the drivers side firewall of your car. Two of them will have the same part numbers (and be oval in shape). Both of those are for the MAF. One is the burnoff relay, and the other is the power relay. I'd recommend replacing them both. Almost any parts store should carry replacements.

They happen to be the same spec. as the ones that control your fans (which are in the passenger fender) on the 89.

Can you rev past 4k?? I had a weird MAF problem when I finished the motor, cuz the green wire was split.. It would run like crap, and wouldn't rev past 4k.

beg to differ.. the two same relays are NOT for the MAF sensor, one is for the fuel pump, one is for the MAF, then there is a smaller one for the MAF burn off. I believe the one you want is the one with the black connector (there should be a grey and a black one for the two similar relays) Hey.. you can even try swapping the 2 relays the next time you have the problem... that should eliminate the problem, if that is the problem.
