can someone help id like to know the proper running temp of 305 tpi i start car, and it smokes a bit from exhaust, and quits im figuring valve seats maybe runs good, poor idle some times its high and sometimes its low. im in middle of trying to figure out the hole setting the tps sensor an all that, i dont quit understand the digital meter thing but we can come back to that.

my question is why the smoke, anyone know, second question when initally started i can drive the car, harder ill call it, and engine sounds real good, after it running 30 minutes maybe 40 it will have like a pinging of like bad or low quality fuel. i only run good fuel higher octane actually

is there something that could be going on that is simple that could exsplain the valve ping that i could do to try an rectify it or is it heads related, doesnt seem right shouldnt it do it all the time regardless of temp if it were heads,

i was thinking it was getting hot and pinging cause of it being warmer then should b but its only running like 210 mayb 215 at its very highest, no someone along the life of car hard wired one of the fans, it kicks on with the key turning forward dont know what that is about but i bought some fans of here and im waiting for them to arrive and im going to address that hole issue but the fans running so i dont think its fan related,

any ideals,

First off i would check the timing. Disconnect est first). Timing should be at 6 degrees BTDC. Smoking upon initial startup is ok, just valve seals. Running a little hot should not really cause any pinging. Run a bottle of lucas fuel injector cleaner through at your next fill up.That stuff also cleans out carbon deposits in the engine. Pinging is definately a sign that timing needs to be checked. Check your car for codes too ,you can use a paperclip.

i believe your temps are normal for stock. That is if you still have the stock chip. Better check. Fan should come on at around 210 stock, The secondary fan (passenger side) wont come on till about 240 or so. You don't want fans running all the time. Wears them out faster and puts a strain on voltage. I personally run a 160 degree thermo because i don't like my car running past 200 in the summer,plus my chip is designed for it.

the car is bone stock had it about a month and know absolutly nothing about the early computer controlled cars, the idle is very aggresive it is wanting to idle high when you push clutch in it goes up to about 1400 1500 or so maybe a bit higher and stays until you tap the pedal

i pulled the codes and got 22 24 33
i bought a digital ohm meter and have been trying to check the tps sensor, i used a harness from another car and improvised it so as i could plug it into my tps sensor and placed the wires into my cars harness making the jumper connection and tried to read the digital thing. but honestly i dont know what im doing i dont know what to set the ohm meter on i dont even know if i have it plugged into the right plugs.

id like to find out if i need to replace it so i could get it before parts store closes, also, if someone could exsplan to me how to check the timing im sure i could check it, it only does the pinging after its been running long enough to get warmed up.

the fans are wired hmmm... how do i put this, there is a wire from the plug running to ground, if you disconnect the ground it goes off engine on or off doesnt matter, hook the wire back to ground and the relay behind the battery clicks once or twice depending on how quick you make the connection i guess that indicating a bad relay, dont know. this was all done before i got it. i bought new fans out of another car on here im waiting for them to show up and im gonna track down and complety fix the fan problem no matter what is going on back to stock application the hole car is stock i intend to keep it that way. it runs killer lots of power till it gets warm then seems to lack a little power but we honestly dont drive it hard at all, AT ALL REALLY we really want to kinda preserve the car, its a rust free car great interior un molested version really nice actually i got some pics today i was pretty impressed with how it looks it needs paint but that is about it. anyhow ive replaced heater core when i got it and one of the sides on heater core was what seemed to be completely blocked off i tiped it over and brown water come out one side and green out other, and the water pump sounds like its got a bearing bad it is just noisy the car doesnt run over 210 215 max probably just dont want it to go higher and the pinging only happens after its warmed up. give me a call it would be easier then typing 937 562 1501 thanks steve

the a/c fan comes on if you reset the ecm, and on occasion has nothing really to do with turning on a/c at all, the passenger side fans runs with turn of key, i know that is wrong but i just havent gotten to it yet, im moving toward that direction waiting on fans to show

so tonight i would be happy with dianosing the tps code and replacing if need i know its not set right i went to change it and didnt know you needed to set it with an ohm meter and just un did it and put it back on, lol like it was that easy or something, i know the vss is the vechile speed sensor but it appear to be a broken cable, dont know there either i did remove the end out of transmission and hooked it to a drill and turned it manually low rpm trying to see if speed o meter rose it jumped once and that was it, it also had a bad oil pressure sending unit i fixed that issue just small stupid things amatter with it, really nothing serious but the idol thing is pretty aggervating i would like to concour that one tonight and belive i could if i could figure the digital ohm meter thing out, how do you run one of those any how.
