help identifying cut wires / connector

Hi guys,

Im nearly finished putting the wiring harness in place on my 87 GTA, ive swapped from a 5.0 to a 5.7 and the wiring harness that came with the 5.7 was in much better condition than mine, although it still had a few cut wires here and there.

First up are these ones that are part of the + battery wiring, there is a 20amp fuse that sits in a holder and bolts to the body near the steering box, however the connector thats attached to it has one missing wire, im not sure where it should be going

And on the same wire closer to the battery terminal is that round black part which has a thinner wire sticking out but is barely visible as its wire is just about all gone too

And the only other thing i could find a female connector for is this connector right up on the firewall, its not the one that goes to the transmission as thats already plugged in

Re: help identifying cut wires / connector

The fuse by the battery is the fuel pump fuse. second picture is not factory. Not totally sure on the third.

Re: help identifying cut wires / connector

thanks, i got a friend to check his TPI car too and his connector looks like it was cut too but someone else has connected a new wire and ran it straight to the positive battery terminal, does that sound right ?

I find it odd that my cars original harness had this cut, the harness i got with the 5.7 was cut, and my friends is cut too ?? surely they didnt come from the factory like that !?!?!

as for the connetor up by the intake / dizzy i guess i will have to wait until everything is done and look for a corresponding connector around that area ?

Re: help identifying cut wires / connector

third pic may be for the egr solenoid. I'm not positive, It is normally on the p/side of the distributor.

Re: help identifying cut wires / connector

I think the EGR connector is a single round pin plug, and ive also deleted my EGR now anyway

Egr solenoid is a two pin. I'm positive its the same two pin weather pack connector you show. Though it seems to be in a slightly wrong place. Since it's deleted on your car it's neither here nor there.

Re: help identifying cut wires / connector

Pic #2 - Must assume that it the pos battery cable that was converted from side post to top post. In addition to the 2 large cables that run to the starter and alternator, there will also be a third branch off the pos in order to supply the fuel pump/ECM fuse in pic #1, as well as the fuse links to power the hot sides of the electric fan relays.

Pic #3 - Sure looks like the EGR solenoid connector to me. Another possiblity is the infamous "mystery plug". Honestly, it sounds like a joke, but there have been several confirmed reports on this website site that a connector, that looks exactly like that one, and in that location was present on a factory fresh untouched wiring harness, but was plugged into nothing and just blowing in the breeze.

Re: help identifying cut wires / connector

hmmm, maybe it is this mystery connector, because theres nothing else to plug it into around there, and the harness is in the right place as nearly everything else is plugged in now and fits. i guess i will know when i try and start the car if it fails miserably or something doesnt work !

As for pic no 1. the connector is now plugged into the corresponding one which disappears back up the wiring harness towards the firewall, no doubt it goes through the car to the fuel pump if its the fuel pump fuse.

Im still not sure if there should be a new wire attached where that missing one is ?? and does it go straight to the positive battery terminal like my friends 86 TPI

Re: help identifying cut wires / connector

The round thing in the second pick is a junction point where the fusible links attached for the cooling fan circuit. The wire that is cut off is actually the fusible link, the wire itself burns up and is not reusable. It ran to a single connector weatherpack which connected to an orange wire to power the fans. Just run that wire through a fuse (I used 30) and straight to power. Unfortunately I know of no way of repairing it to look factory.
