looking for help with fine tuning my build
i'm sure my user name has come up on here more than it should for help on my first 350 build, but i am still in need of help (dont worry, its almost done).
I got the motor up and running correctly, cooling issues solved, fluids topped off and double checked, everything seems to be going good. but i feel like i should have more power out of my build, it seems uncomfortably similar to my 305, which is terrible for how much money i've spend. But heres what i'm thinking which i need help with.
When tuned performance wrote me this chip, he told me to advance the timing 10degrees so i did. the motor still bogged so we decided to advance it more. now its probably around 12-14 degrees advanced. it doesn't heavily bog like it used to but it doesnt seem to have the "get-up-and-go" that it should. do i need to advance the timing more? at what point is too far for these motors??
heres my setup, which i've posted a million times cuz i'm so lost lol.
350 short block
summit aluminum heads
crane 2032 cam
accel intake base
SLP intake runners
24lb SVO injectors
custom air intake
and a couple tiny unmentionables.

Re: looking for help with fine tuning my build
If the chip was designed for 10 degrees, that's where I would set it. There is a table in the computer that adds distributor advance, and it is based on a known starting point.
Just to double check, are you unplugging the distributor wire ( brown wire) before setting your timing? If that's OK, might double check your TPS settings . They can get thrown off when adjusting idle or IAS, and it seems to be to be an iterative process to dial it in.

ok. i dont have any way to monitor the air / fuel or anything. yes i have been unplugging the wire before setting the timing, although the last chip i had written by Tuned Performance was to have the idle bumped up a little and change the injector size (was at 30lbs and i'm running 24lb). so maybe when the idle got bumped up that changed something? one person suggested trying to advance the timing to just prior to it pinging and work my way back....would that be a place to start too maybe? after dumping probably 3k in parts and lots of time into the motor, i dont want to destroy it

Re: looking for help with fine tuning my build
at 10 degrees advanced, i'd hit the gas and it would bog down pretty decently. so my father (ase mechanic 20 yrs) suggested to advance the timing. after doing so, it didnt bog as much. advanced it a hair more and no noticeable bogging it would seem. i dont have specialty tools for certain things so i have to go with troubleshooting methods

i dont know much about car computer stuff. it is much easier for me to bolt stuff together and build it up. so i need to be walked through all the computer stuff if you guys dont mind. i dont mind learning it, but i know next to nothing about it.

You might want to look into buying a moates.net extreme aldl
https://www.moates.net/aldu1-and-cabl1-p-127.html
Datalog with tunerpro rt $6E adx
http://tunerpro.net
I can make major improvements bye seeing closed loop idle and acceleration.
Wot should be done with a wide band 02 reading.
The bogging is more than likely fueling too little or too much or acceleration enrichment.
Like Orr stated don't mess with timing until the fueling is more corrected then the timing can be advanced avoiding predetonation. Then back to minor corrections in fueling

jeez...just when i thought i was done with this build, it seems like i still have a bit to go. so i need to buy a $80 cable to data log the fuel in basically? how do i data log? this stuff is beyond what i know...i can build the motor but computers is something i am not very good at, despite growing up in the computer age.

Re: looking for help with fine tuning my build
alright, i downloaded the WinALDL program, purchased a cable which should be in tomorrow or the next day. i double checked the timing, somehow it had gone allll the way down to 4 degrees advanced. the label on the hood says 6 degrees advanced is stock, so that was a problem which sholdnt have been. i advanced it to 10, it helped, but i still am unable to do a burnout with the car (even the 178k mile 305 could do a burnout from a standstill). so now the timing is where it should be, it seems like it has a little bit of hesitation to it but like i said, i still cant get it to burnout.

Re: looking for help with fine tuning my build
Yeah the heads and cam with new intake need some wide open tuning. If its bogging down on the wide open hit then its likely some accel enrichment based stuff. But if it stays bogging like its slow, then overall fuel is off and needs some power enrichment.
If you roll into gas slowly as you go wide open and it feels better then its definately most likely accel enrich.

Re: looking for help with fine tuning my build
when i slam my foot to the floor, i can feel a little bit of wheel hop, if i'm facing in an incline grade slightly i can feel the back end shift a tiny bit but thats it. once i get over about 1700-2000 rpms, it takes off, no bogging at all. yes, when i ease into full throttle the car does not bog down at all. so i guess i need more fuel going in at the start of acceleration then? or is it too much fuel now?
also it was recommended i run premium fuel in the car, which i have been doing, would that somehow delay the burn meaning i'd need a bit more of a timing increase? was wondering about the higher octane fuel thing.

Re: looking for help with fine tuning my build
i think my computer has vista. so i guess its too up to date? ALDLcable.com sent a CD that also has several other programs on it. ive tried 3 others (tunerpro, scannerpro, and freescan) and none of them seem to work either. i downloaded the drivers and everything for the cable. i suck at this computer stuff and i was hoping to avoid this lol

Re: looking for help with fine tuning my build
hey guys, its been a long time without an update. ive been spending a lot of time trying to get any of these scanning programs to work, but to no avail i can't seem to get it to work for me. the furthest ive gotten with it was getting the check engine light to flash and the fan to turn on, with this going, the car has run the best it has yet. It idled without stalling all over, and it sounded good, but i just couldnt get the program to work. anyone have any ideas how i can just get this datalogged to so i can send that to Tuned performance or so i can get the info on how its running up to you guys? the car has been slowly running worse and worse each time i use it. it stalls when i slow down, at a stop. when the a/c is on, it stalls. it has no low end power really, it takes a while for the rpms to come up when i stomp on the gas.

Re: looking for help with fine tuning my build
i have tried several computers with my ALDL cable, and i just can not get it to work...but while doing all sorts of research through this site and opening different threads i did find one thing. the SVO 24lb injectors are running at 25.5-28 lbs in reality due to the different psi systems theyre intended for. so that being said, i figure i may be able to solve my issue with throwing money at the problem and getting some Bosch 24lb injectors from southbay soon. hopefully that helps

Re: looking for help with fine tuning my build
If you want to check your afr try buying a innovate wideband o2 sensor and gauge
Very easy install , plug into cigarette lighter for power and put a 1/2 half coupling in cat area or before
You will be able to get rpm vs Afr

Re: looking for help with fine tuning my build
i can smell the exhaust is running super rich, it has been but the problem was that i didnt know if it was the tune or the injectors. i'd feel a little better off putting brand new injectors from southbay in vs these SVO injectors that i dont know the history of even if it does wind up being the tune.
