Need Help.... New built 355 is shakin and dancin!!!
As many of you may no, I (well not really me, i help supply the MAN with the wrenches ) pulled the 305 about 4 months ago... I have since built a really nice 355 with heads and a BUNCH of other stuff!!! We put the engine and it started and we set the timing perfectly with a timing light....... BUT THE DANG ENGINE IS SHAKIN LIKE CRAZY..... Its not like an earthquake or anything but it vibrates a lot and the guy thats doing the work said we need to find out what is wrong pretty soon or its going to tear the pi$$ out of the bearings!!!!!! It vibrates like it has a solid roller HUGE CAM, and i mean HUGE, So that leads me here I need help!!
Possible Problems???
1) Its not the spark plug wires, we checked the firing order twice and its correct, and all of the plugs are firing (checked that two)
2) I really think that it might be this, two vaccum lines or something are switched which is cause the vibration??? I dunno i really need help though
3) The crank i got is a 350 5.7 marine crank.... well the guy helping me said the harmonic balancer might be different, but i thought all 350's were internally balanced and would use the same harmonic balancer
4) We marked all of the lines and everything as we were dissassembling the 305, and now 2 of the fuel injector connectors (the 2 in the back drivers side) (from the wiring harness) looked crossed like they should be switched, but when the engine was running we switched them, and it surprised me becuase it did not run ANY worse or ANY better
5) Also, the engine did not set off ANY codes!!!! so that was a plus, it also has a full exhaust on it and is not running open headers or anything.......... GIVE ME SOME HELP BOYS!!!! it is all greatly appreciated :hail: :hail: :hail: :hail: !!!! Heres my sig, it might help ya with suggestions!

Does it sound like the engine is missing at all? Vibration can be caused by an improper balancer... maybe the balancer is made for an engine that IS externally balanced, in turn making the internally balanced engine, out of balance. Thats a long shot...
Did you unplug the ECM wire going to the distributor when you set the timing? Did you put higher flow injectors in? Does it seem to have power at all, or does it hesitate when revved up? Does the vibration go away at hight RPM's?

It really sounds like you got a couple of spark plug wires crossed up. All the fuel injectors fire at the same time, so that is not the problem, as long as they are all hooked up. I would call the crank manufacturer and find out which balancer it needs, though I would think it would take the 6 3/4".

It definately positively is not crossed wires..... we checked that 3 times.... yea the vibration seem to go away at higher rpm's...... im going to call the machine shop i got the crank from.....

Well boys i think i found the problem... I emailed the machine shop I bought the crank from......
When I got the crank it did not come with the little dowel for the flywheel... We tried pretty hard to get the dowel out of the 305 AND the 350 crank with no luck... we ended up just saying screw it. So we put it all in and together, and the machine shop guy said that if you had a manual tranny (I do) that it is a huge part of the balancing system, and will vibrate pretty bad... well that seems to be my problem, and now i gotta pully the trany/clutch/part of exhaust/ but it will be worth it!!! THIS SUCKER IS LOAD AS HECK!!!! 1 3/4 Stainless SLP Tri-Y headers, 3" Stainless SLP Y pipe, 3" hooker aluminum Catback and once i pass e-check in a week or so I have a pipe that replaces the cat. But it ROARS even w/o the !cat, i cant wait to meet some of you guys!!!!
