What stall?!? Im poor and need a stall!

I am about to start some radical engine changes. Etec 170cc heads, and a pretty hefty cam. Probably something like a xe270 or so. I need a new stall.

Im looking for a 2400 or so stall. I'm trying to keep it cheap. Anyone have good/bad luck with TCI or b&m converters? Or are they other cheap stalls that are better?!

Anyone have any luck with midwest converters? They have a non-lockup 2500-3000 stall for 290$ sounds like a decent price to me.

I'm using a th350 3500 stall converter with the XR270 cam and vortec heads. I had been using a 2500 stall converter with a 700r4 and it was more than adequate. Check out the Torco torque converter website. I think it's www.torcoconverters.com. They do awesome work for a great price.

Might check www.700R4.com. Something like 2400 stall for $154 "heavy duty"

Are you running a TH350 or 700R4? If it's a TH350, contenintal makes a very good convertor and its about 400 bucks, If its a 700R4 you can get an ACT 9.5 from dana at probuilt for for around 600.

I say this from experience, and didn't realize how true it is, high stalled 12inch convertors suck, they suck they suck they suck. I had one in my car then went with a 9.5, completely different car, it is freaking amazing. My friend with a 71 bird w/ a 455 put the contenintal in and dropped almost 4 tenths off his 1/8 mile time.

I know they are expensive, but dont short yourself and buy all good parts and a junk convertor, you won't know how good your combonation will work till you get a good one.

Im running a 700r4 now. I have slowed my stall search since I'm torn between trannys now. On one hand I want a th350 but on the other I want that extra gear. I don't know yet.

Have you bought any of these parts yet? What are the flow numbers on the Etec heads, dont get caught up in them just cause there edeljunk heads. Also, have you looked at the extreme 268 or 274 cams? The reason I say this is there is so much more cam/head technology out now then there was 5 years, or even 10 years ago, there's no reason not to build an engine with the best parts. If you run a 355 w/vortec heads, protopline heads. or AFR 195's, and a good dual plane intake, you are almost garunteed 400hp, its been done over and over again. The 270 cam is ok, but there alot of better more advanced cams out there, that are going to take advantage of the great port velocity of vortec/protopline heads, and will make awesome power. Personally I am not impressed with edelbrock, they make good intakes....and thats about it, I think right now they are living off there name and not there products and people continue to buy them. There carbs are ok, but are basically carter AFB's with a shinny finish.
If you are going to build an engine, look at the extreme cams, there is a reason they are so popular.
A TH350 would be cheaper to build, and to buy a convertor for, but you also loose the deep first gear, the OD and the lockup. It's expensive, trust me i know.

oh yeah........ ITS MY 1000 post!!!!!!whoo hooooo

I may just get vortec heads now. I haven't decided. If I do I will probably upgrade the springs so I can run more lift But I'll probably run it with my lt4 cam for awhile. Then eventually upgrade. Cam swaps suck.

there is a factory gm stall converter that stalls at 2200 behind a 350ci motor using a 700r4 tranny. i can get them rebuilt with a six month warranty for around 250 bucks or so. it cost 320 from gm to buy it and it is remanned from them also. Let me know if your interested or not. I just got hooked up with this deal and i dont know how long i can continue to get them at this price. I am running it in my car also, but cant get the track times till winter is over so i have no data on how much it will give you yet. just thought i would share the deal with others.
