4th gen rear in 3rd gen..again...

Alright iv done a search on this and what i got is some yeah itll work....but i want to know for sure....the rear end is a direct bolt in? exept its just a little longer.... so the driveshaft is the perfect length, stock 3rd gen torque arm will work, now what size rear are in the newer camaro's? and how much stronger are they? they must be pretty good if they hold up with the more powerful motors.... i need some definate hard information about this before i go ahead and do it. plus how hard is it to convert from rear drum to disc? alot of work involved?

RE:4th gen rear

I just finished with the fourth gen rear swap in my car. Everything is a direct bolt on. Stock Driveshaft=yes, although this would be a good time to get an aluminum piece. Stock torque arm=absolutely. The rears in the newer generations are the exact same ten bolt rears as the ones in ours except they're longer. IIRC they don't handle any more power either, about the same. As far as drum to disc, I would suggest getting the entire rear end with brakes and all. It'll all work with your car.

any 3rd or 4th gen f body rear will work, direct bolt in. some brakes are differant. there is no strength differances between 10 bolts reguardless of what year they came from

Even if it was from a 2002 SS? with 3.42's and posi.... if theres no difference in strength why do people swap them and how come then run the LS1's with these rears? and mod them.....

yes.even from a 02 ss

people swap them because they're cheap upgrades...

they're cheap upgrades because LS1 owners can easily frag them, so they swap em out for 9" or 12bolts instead....

to the 4thgen owners, they're useless... heck i had one GIVE me a 3.42 posi disc rear, and i didnt even ask for it.

how is it considered an upgrade if its no better than the stock 3rd gen ones tho? i maybe misunderstanding whatyou mean but if it can handle bolt ons for an LS1 running 12's-13's shouldnt it be better? my brothers snapped with a posi slicks running a 13.30

i can blow them up with a stock l03 if i had slicks...... traction is what kills them... normally the tires will spin before enough power goes thru em to blow.... once you have massive traction, then they start breaking.

its a upgrade because alot of 3rdgen owners got bad gear ratios, no posi, and drum brakes..... by putting this on, you can get better ratios, a posi, and discs.....

the strength diff is ZERO. the actual diff is exactly the same... the ONLY diffs between the 4thgen and 3rdgen ones are:
  • longer axle tubes
  • longer axles (because of the longer tubes)
  • diffrent brake mounting flanges (for the diffrent 4thgen brakes)

other then that, they're identical to the late 3rdgen ones... like whats in my 91.

I disagree.

The axle out of 4th gens have 28 spline axles while the pre-88 cars only had 26 spline.

Also, a 2002 SS camaro has a Heavy duty zexel torsion unit which is a clutchless positraction type device and is much much stronger than any third gen stock posi. SS's run low 13s or high 12s stock. These axles hold up perfectly well to 11.5 second passes.

I will agree that there is near little difference between a non SS and a third gen axle except for the 28 vs 26 spline though that only applies to the weaker pre-88 axles.

Didnt the 2002 SS's have the upgraded AUBURN posi unit? I believe the Zexel torsen is the take off unit that they have to sell used now.

As far as I know, you can order it either or, but i think someone else should back me up on that before you take it as fact.

Zexel does make two models of their torsion unit, the regular one and the heavy duty. The regular Zs get the regular duty one and the SS's can either get an Auburn or the heavy duty Zexel.

i am kinda planning on buying this one from the guy, he said this.I have a 4th gen rear axle out of a 2002 SS camaro. The camaro now has
a 12 bolt. The fact that it is out of an SS means it has the heavy
duty Zexel Torsion unit installed by SLP. This "posi" is an amazing unit
and requires no posi lube to be added to the differential oil. It has
3.42 gears and is in perfect condition. There are roughly 3500 babied
break-in miles on the rear end. LS1 guys are running in the 11s on slicks
with these rears, something which a non SS rear has a lot of trouble
doing.

is this true? i think he sounds like he knows what he's talking about. he said it before i even posted about it.

Also, most people swap them if they are running 4th gen offset wheels as 3rd gen wheels will stick out like this,

yes the SS and firehawk cars got a diffrent posi.... but if you wanted to (and could find one) you could bolt that exact same posi in your 3rdgen housing.

like i said, same rear.

so this SS unit is stronger, so itll handle 4-5k rpm off line starts? with slicks? even tho there both 7.5's are the ring and pinion weak in them? i mean he wants a pretty penny for that rear, so id ont want to put it in, and it not hold up.....

Woah, woah...hold the phone....
WHY ON EARTH do you think that you need to launch at 4,000 RPM? If you have an engine that starts making peak power at '4-5k' RPM, you're definitely gonna need something A LOT stronger than a 4th gen rear... I hope you're planning on revving to 11k RPM, too, because there's not much point in launching at 5000 and shifting at 6000... considering a well-built and balanced "race" 400 redlines at about 6,000. It makes good power too...and you've got a T5? Not for long, you don't...

The above image is a 3rd gen wheel, but not a stock one, it's an American Racing 16" wheel.

With fourth gen wheels (ZR1's), the wheels will fit perfectly. if theyre going to be 11" wide, though, ull need to do some modifcations in the well. Do a search and you'll find out how. Otherwise, they'll go perfectly with the car.
