It controls the Application of the 1-2 band and the release of it and Application of the 2-3 clutches. All that means is it REALLY firms up the 1st to 2nd shift and the 2nd to 3rd shift. It also holds the band tighter to help it to not slip.

The servo only activates the 2-4 band. This band is activated for second and overdrive. It makes the application of the band both faster and more powerful. The reason is that the apply pistons within the servo have more surface area and receive more pressure.
3rd gear is activated by both the forward and the 3-4 cluth packs, both of which have their own apply pistons.
The servo speeds up the 1-2 shift since it applies teh 2-4 band faster and harder. THE SERVO DOES NOT AFFFECT THE 2-3 SHIFT.
A stronger servo is a reasonably priced upgrade, and you can change it with the trans in the car. (tough, but possible....)

700R4/4L60E Heavy Duty Servo Kit
The TCI high performance servo kit utilizes a surface area up to 63% greater than stock providing an additional 300 lbs of 2nd gear band apply force. The TH-700R4 servo kit also eliminates the common 2nd to 3rd flare problem. This kit can be easily installed without removing the transmission or draining the fluid. Comes complete with required seals and o-rings. Note: This servo assembly is already factory installed in C4 & C5 Corvettes and 1993 - Up LT1/LS1 equipped F-body vehicles.

Call Dana over at Pro-Built, or check the website cause he hooked me up for 20 bucks and it worked wonders on my 1-2 shift AND eliminated my 2-3 flare up. It took me like 20 minutes to install it without dropping the trans and made a HUGE difference.

Alright guys. I have always wondered about this "corvette servo" but just thought it was just like the aftermarket ones. The ones that summitracing put out are about $80 a piece. Are they comparable to the "corvette servo"? Which is better? I am about to put in some servo's, shift kit and new torque convertor too. Just wondering. Thanks

Dana told me that those Billet servos are overkill with a shift kit. Just get his it's like 20 bucks from probuilt.
White91GTA, yeah that's what I mean, instead of redlining then BOOM, next gear, it revs a little higher then slowly lowers the RPM's and grabs 3rd, the servo fixes that.

GASGZLR, thank you, that is what i figured but was not sure. My car shifts at like 2000 under normal load but on the 2-3 shift, instead of shifting at 2000 it revs up to 3000 before shifting.

Whoa thats a lot to rev up, sounds like your 2-3 clutch pack is ready to retire. The servo will put a band aid on it for now. I thought that some of the 350 TPI cars got the servo stock, maybe not.

I do not know if it got the servo stock or not...if it did, it should probably be replaced anyways. Tranny and body have 161,480 miles on them

Im really glad i found this post!!!!!!!! I was just on the verge (2-3 Days) from taking my transmission out to get it rebuilt. I have a good strong 1-2 shift, and sometimes it shifts nice and hard at WOT. My 2-3 shift has about a 150-300 rpm flare and i was thinking for the last 6 months that it was time for a rebuild. Just today i was deciding wether to take it out this weekend (Friday) or wait. So that "little" rev is prolly just a flare and i can fix that with a $15-$100 servo. If this isnt beat to death-Whats involves in changing it? Man im glad i found this!!!

The main reason GM introduced the Corvette servo was to "fix" the 2-3 flare/spinup on the 2-3 shift, with engines that had some power & using the 553 servo, this helped the 1-2 & 2-3 shifts. The Corvette servo is also the 3rd gear accumulator.

Good stuff here. I too have been experiencing that 2-3 flare up under heavy throttle in my '88. I just passed it off as slipping and time for a rebuild. I'll definitely try swapping to the 'Vette servo.

Wow I'm glad I found this. I rebuilt my trans and added a shift kit and ever since then its had an annoying 2-->3 flare under heavy throttle. I posted about it and got no response, so I've just been gritting my teeth and living with it. I'll be so happy if the vette servo fixes it......

I'll be buying my tranny parts from www.bulkpart.com, they have some excellent prices. Corvette servo is 10 bucks IIRC.

For the price of the servo Dana (pro built) is offering i suggest going with his stuff. He will NEVER steer you wrong and is always available on the phone for tech questions. -John
