gear swap

Im looking todo a gear swap on my car, right now it has an open 2.73 rear, im thinking about going to 3.42 posi and probably installing a shift kit on the automatic or losing it for a standard eventually (im really hating how this thing shifts)

i know theres tons of info on this subject but I cant really tell from most of them, does anyone do these swaps on there daily drivers?
(just to make a point yesterday i was searching for info on ttop leaks and reading this post, and someone who offered up there knowledge on ttop leaks then proceeded to mention he has had his car in the rain a whole TWO times, whoaaaa anyways... :P)

I dont goto the track and i really dont plan to, not with my driver, I just like to have fun so I dont mind losing a little bit of gas mileage for something I can enjoy
I do alot of driving, 30 miles a day for work, and probably another 30 a day just for the hell of it :P we have some of the worst roads and weather as far as im concerned around here
ok question is, how big of a safety thing would 3.42's and a shift kit be for a daily driver, with crappy roads and crappy weather, i can already spin the tires and i read from people who have installed shift kits spin the tires when there not even trying.
anyways any feedback from people who actually drive these beasts would be appreciated
