Cheap TH700R4 builders?
Hi guys,
My plans for building a high power IROC have gone out the window due to increasing interest in getting a Vette. Don't worry the IROC isnt going anywhere!
Anbywya, I need a new transmission, or at least a rebuild as mine won't do 2-3rd gear changes at full throttle. UK tranny shops don't have much experience of the TH700 and ones that have a little want a lot of money. So I'd rather source a US one and get it shipped over.
The car is a near stock 88 305 TPI (just the free mods & a prom and filters) and will be staying that way. It gets road use only and might go to the strip a couple of times a year.
So I figure i can't justfy spending over $1,000 on a transmission.
The guys in the link below want $700 (plus core charge) for a std TH700, and another $200 for a slightly upgraded one.
Does anyone have any experience of these guys or maybe wants to recommend someone else with tranny's under $1,000 (inc core charge).
Also do I need a new torque converter or not?
I mean, do they wear out or something or are new ones just for added stength and diffferent stall speeds?
Probuilts ones are too expensive for me (especially by the time I've added a torque converter). I was going to go with them but now I don't see the point as the car hardly gets driven and there are no performance upgrades planned...

Have you checked with them for shipping overseas and the cost? Some US companys won't even do it I'm told.
I agree Probuilt has a great product. Here's where I got my transmission from.

I have a US address they can ship to and that company will ship it on to me in a container with other car enthusiasts bits.
And I can wire them the money if they won't take a non US credit card.
A std rebuild of my box with a new torque converter is $750. And they want $300 for removal and reinstall. Which I think is a good deal.
As part of the rebuild theywill fit the Transgo shift kit and Corvette servo I have ordered from Pro-Built and will also install a B&M transmission cooler I have ordered.
They use slightly uprated clutches etc, but not the extensive list of mods that you get with a Pro-Built tranny.
So I suppose it is the cheaper way to go as $750 is less than I was expecting to pay for a rebuild and it will cost me more to get a box from the US (although I suspecx the US box will be of higher quality).
