700-r4 to 350
Alright I have an 86 camaro with a 700-r4 transmission thats going out. I know a guy who is willing to give me a 350 trany, I dont really know anything about transmissions and I was wondering how hard it would be to switch it over. I have found this kit Trany kit and I would like to know if that has everything I need to install the 350?
Thanks
Thanks

The link doesn't work. You need a new crossmember & TA to work with it that moves the TA off the trans and onto the crossmember. Your driveshaft will be too short, so you'll need a new one. Those are the biggest obstacles.

You should only get the 350 or 400 tranny if your are punchnig out more than 400-500 horses to the wheels. Choose a tranny That can handle your powerband.

I'd run a 700R4 or a Th350 before I'd ever run a TH400, unless I really needed one. TH400s suck up a huge amount of power compared to either the TH350 or 700R4. The TH400 is strong enough stock to take a big block, so if all you've got is a small block it's total overkill.

thanks for the replies. Im just looking for the cheapest way to get the trany fixed, and I figured it would be cheaper to get one for free then have the 700-r4 rebuilt, whiched Im told will cost around $1000.

Bottom line is that the expense of the TH350 conversion would prolly cost you close to what you would spend for stock rebuild of your 700r4. You would also have alot more work than a simple trans swap...its not the easiest solution by far. A better option would be to buy a used 700r4 or find someone to rebuild yours at a reasonable price. If ya shop around Im sure thier are places in your area that do rebuilds for less than a 1000.00. Hell my fully built 700r4 only cost me 1210.00 to have done.

being someone who has done this, its not expensive or difficult to change to a th350 if its the longer tailshaft. both b&m and hurst make a kit that costs around $100 that lets you use your stock crossmember and your torque arm. not expensive at all.
