Newer Shifter for an '82

TGO Friends,
My son's shifter was modified by the previous owner to allow the use of a TH-700R4. The original '82 shifter does not have enough detents (NO Overdrive). The previous owner removed all the guts and replaced the ****. The tranny could be shifted without a key and without a button (very dangerous and very easy to go to Reverse straight from OD)

We purchased a shifter from a '90 RS. We had to modify the '82's tunnel mount and the mount on the shifter for the steering lock cable. We're having real trouble getting the adjustment correct for all gears. Also when we pull all the way to 1st the cable will not return properly (it's being pulled too far out.)
Is there a cable difference in the new models?
Is it stronger (i.e. lesss flex)?
Is there an aftermarket cable that's a bit stronger?
What gear do you guys set the Cable/shifter/Tranny at initially?

We looked a Jeg's but the cables they offer are only for aftermarket shifters... don't look like they'll work.

Any advice would be appreciated....

Sincerely
Kurt

We figured it out.....

We found a cable and mount in a newer Firebird ('89?). It mounts closer to the Transmission lever (1 Bolt Closer) and the cable has more throw and is MUCH better constructed. TH700 works great now.

Man, I guess when you change from 200c to 700r4 you need EVERYTHING! Looks factory, though, I'd say you did a real good job.
