Just got the new stall....Have a couple ?'s
When I was at super chevy my fiance bought me 2500 stall for my GTA. I put it in last night and I am very impressed. It really freed the car up alot. When I had the tranny out I put a 4th gear lockup only kit in and replaced the TV cable. I aslo had to replace the shift cable because it had pulled the cover away from the sleeve. My question is, does a new torque converter need some time to break in to stall all the way. I know a converter will stall at different speeds depending on torque but mine will only stall at 1700-2000. I am also wondering if it is because I am trying it on the street and not at the track. At the track I have alot more traction which would allow the stall to reach its peak. I dont think it is due to lack of torque but I am not sure. If anyone has had the same problem any reply will be appreciated.

The stall rating on a converter is only an estimate. A converter will stall at different speeds depending on how much torque is put into it. A 10" 2500 stall converter is different than a 11 or 12" 2500 stall converter. Although the stall speeds are the same, one converter is considered loose and the other is tight.
The only way to know the true stall speed behind any engine is with a transbrake. Holding a vehicle with the foot brake will not get you to the peak stall speed. The vehicles brakes just won't be able to hold the car back.
Make sure you have an aftermarket tranny cooler installed. Any converter with a higher than stock stall speed will slip at lower speeds. This builds excess heat and heat kills trannies.
There is no such thing as a break in period for a converter.

I did not believe there was a break in for them but I was not sure. Do you think it will stall higher at the track.

Why would it? Do you make more HP/torque at the track than on the street?
Once the converter reaches it's stall speed, the impeller and the turbine are going the same speed. Anything lower and the converter is slipping. All converters slip. If they didn't the engine would stall when you came to a stop.

The only reason I asked that was because you have more traction at the track at will allow the converter to slip to its peak stall. On the street it starts to spin between 1800-2000 but just slightly. I think if it is at the track and I have more traction it will hold the tires a little tighter and allow the converter to meet its peak.

Before I got a t brake, and wanted to know what the stall was actually stalling at, we'd get into high gear going as slow as possible and then stand on it (transmission HAS to stay in high gear though) and watch the needle on the tach, it will jump upto actual stall speed and stay there until everyting "catches up" to it.
You can also visually do this at the track also, but you need to have 100% traction other wise your not doing any good. As soo as you stand on it, look to see where the tach needle goes to, this will be your actual stall rating.
NOT 100% accurate this route, but close enough to give you a the info you want.

IHI ..dont mean to hijack post, but how much roll or drivetrain slop do you get when you use your transbrake.I just swapped to th350 with a brake and when the button is activated the car rolls about a inch or so.Wild ride when you let the button go though
Just wondering if it took you a while to get used to this when staging? Havent used it at the track yet.Gonna try it out this weekend..thanks for your help

There should be NO movement AT ALL!!, when you activate your brake, something internally is not correct, PM me and I'll shoot you the guys name that builds all our trannies and has at least half the feild at our track with his stuff in it plus many racers across the country, very knowledgeable and will answer you emails with your questions, even thought he did'nt build it will give you things to think about/check.think he headed out of town yesterday but will be back by the weekend.
And yes, there is no ride like a transbrake llaunch, my favorite part of racing....too bad you get used to it and it gets to feeling old and slow again
