I know they've got a bad rep, but can they be improved? I picked up a rear thats got one in it. Before I get a takeout Torsen or Auburn I figured I'd see what I can do with the one I've got.
they explode...there's wieghts in them and if the diff spins too fast or it gets stressed (like one tire spinning on ice) they blow off...I've seen it happen...right through the diff. cover and into the gas tank of a malibu. they are garbage

I have one in my 2004 Silverado. It acts like an open rear most of the time. When it does finally engage, it is very abupt & usually causes both wheels to spin. Fortunatly I don't hammer this vehicle since it's my daily driver. Having one in my 383 Camaro would be a nightmare, until it broke.
Imagine my surprise when I ordered a "limited slip" rearend in my '95 S10. I assumed it would be an Auburn cone type or something similiar to what GM put in our cars. NOOOOOO.
Thanks, GM. It gets stuck in my back gravel driveway with barely an incline and that was when it was nearly new. POS .. IMO.....
I haven't broke out the price sheet from where I ordered it but I bet I paid more than an aftermarket CORRECT limited slip would have cost.
Originally posted by Jetmeck NEVER on the THIRDGENS, only GM pickups had this POS.
My GM van has almost 300,000 on the original GOV-Lock. It is just like others have stated, junk for traction. It will let the right rear spin, lock abruptly, then break the left one loose, complete with the rear-end sway.
I am original owner of an 85' IROC TPI 5.0 auto with 10 bolt 3:42 rear and it came factory with a gov lock, after 49K it was still working properly but it now resides in the "retired pile"
