4th gen rear questions...

Ok, Im a little confused about this stuff. I have rear drum brakes, if I swap in a 4th gen rear will changing to discs be any easier? And also will I be able to use my stock T/A rims without spacers or anything?
Thanks!

Not to sure of ur question, but I have also been interested in 4th gen rear swap. It is not as easy as swappin another drum rear in, because the prop. valve needs to be changed. and a 4th gen rear needs some creativity for hooking up the e-brake cable. Going to discs will improve braking and discs are easier to maintain and work on than drums.
4th gen rears are about 3 1/2 inches wider than 3rd gens, so if ur ride is low, make sure the wheels do not rub the fender (i think i will have a problem here).

I guess I just dont understand what all will be included with the swap..I know its a dumb question but I know literally nothing about rear ends. If I pick up a 4thgen rear, and it comes with brakes, cant I just bolt it on,fab the e-brake, add a proportioning valve because of my old drums, and be done?

As far as I know, yes. But I have not done the swap yet, only read about it.
Try searching for "4th gen rear", "4th gen rear problems", "4th gen rear issues", or something like that and you will definetly find answers.

yes it will bolt right up. and you might rub

mine rubbed, i had a 245/50r15 on a 15x7 stock iroc wheel on the back. it wuld rub when i hit a big bump.My car was also lowered. I had to get the fenders rolled and a ADJ. panhard rod.

the e-brake cables didn't bolt uop for me. they where shorter, so i had to add a little.

Wycelf, did you roll the fenders yourself or did you take it to a body shop? I have 255/60/15s in the rear, and its low from age, so I'll need to roll the fenders.

Dont forget...if the 4th gen rear had 4-Channel ABS, it will have two individual brake lines going to teh back. So you will have to do some fabbing so that you can use one single brake line from the master cylinder back to the rear axle. Im going to try to use a stock 3rd gen rear brake hose...not sure if it will work... brake lines are easy though. Good luck!

Ok, there are 6-7 junkyards around where I live and NONE of them have anything newer than late eighties except for one. This guy has the rear axle for a 95 Camaro w/3.42s, posi calipers and everything else. He wants $500 for it. It sounds reasonable to me and I dont mind paying a little more if I can have it now and installed soon, but what are some opinions on it??? Any would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Find out the mileage on it and check it out before commiting to paying. I have a 4th gen rear lined up, 3.42, posi, out of a z28 for $325. If I don't like the looks of it when I see it, I'll pass it up, but for now, price is rite for me.

i looked at it today and it looked good. Im not sure of the mileage or what shape the gears are in, but the guy said if we opened it up and the gears were ok then i was going to have to buy it so I told him to wait for a while. I found a 4thgen rear w/ 3.23s/posi/brakes for $275 but Id have to pay shipping. If I have 2.73s now, will I notice a difference w/3.23s? Would it be much less than 3.42s?? Thanks for helping me out guys!

I always read 3.23 was ideal for TPI, beacuse it makes most it power in low rpms.

I just got that 95 Camaro rear for $500. Its in really good shape and the gears look almost brand new. Started the swap tonight and have the driveshaft out.
