Alternatives to the 700R? '89 formula
My sis has an '89 formula With a 700r that's been slipping for about a year. She wants a more durable trans but i don't know of a 4 speed that's better that's not electronic shift. She doesn't want a 3 speed.(figures, those are easy to retro fit) Can the 700r be made any tougher? how much tougher and how much would that cost? I see that some people on here are using L460s. Are those electronic? how much do they cost? and what would i have to install/change to make it work?
When it comes to automatics i don't know very much. I welcome all of your suggestions/ideas.

A 4L60 is a 700R4 by another name. Her 700R4 can be rebuilt to stand up pretty well under normal use.

I had a 700r4 built for my 79 Z28 and the sbc dynoed in at 438hp,my father and I are building an 86 short box chevy 468bbc should be pushing well over the 500 mark and were gonna get the original 700 built for that.get a fresh rebuild on it and a shift kit and it should do what you need.

Re: Alternatives to the 700R? '89 formula
Someone i know mentioned oversized pumps for the 700r??? I am unsure of exactly what that would do. Get more presure in th valve body?? for a cleaner shift???
I would put a shift kit in it. all the automats i send out for rebuild get shift kits. they are well worth it. If i can get it to stand up to about 300HP, pretty normal driving that would work.
I haven't run across anybody(yet) that has a 700r with 100K miles on it that's not been rebuilt or in need of rebulding. Is this common?
Speaking of....The 700r in my iroc still shifts great but the car only has 64K orig. miles on it. Should i put a shift kit in it now?

Re: Alternatives to the 700R? '89 formula
There plenty of parts to make the 700R4 hold up to some pretty serious horsepower (750-850FWHP). I have everything that is needed to do these right. The 1988 & up transmissions started to go beyond the 100K mark without many problems in stock motor setups. You could add a modified TransGo Shift kit with a Corvette servo to your 1986 transmission. As long as it is in good shape, it should help the shifts all the way around. As for the 1989 transmission, I can build one for your sister. It offers smooth part throttle shifts, and quick shifts at WOT. As for the torque converter, you need to tell me more about the motor, rear end gear ratio, and what the intent of the vehicle is?

Re: Alternatives to the 700R? '89 formula
oh, man. So they got better in '88? I missed them by one year. (th '87 has the auto) Ok, i've put in a couple of shift kits myself - but only in 350turbos.
Any differences i need to know of before i start?
for my sis, I figure somewhere around 300HP and a trans strong enough to stomp on while playing but i don't see it hitting the track w/slicks. no stall converter. And i'd say driven normally about 80% of the time

Re: Alternatives to the 700R? '89 formula
The late 1987 has the second design valve body, and is the same as the 1988. The early 1987 has the first design valve body, and is ok for HD use, but for Street/Strip use, you need the second design valve body and separator plate, easy to do. If you want to install a shift kit for HD use, either early or late design valve body will work. The Corvette servo, boost valves, and a "modified" Shift kit will work for what you want, (a trans strong enough to stomp on while playing). Let me know if I can be of help?

Car: 87 IROC - 67 Camaro
Engine: 383 TPI - ZZ4 TPI
Transmission: 700R4 in both cars
Axle/Gears: 3.27 - 3.36 posi in both cars
Re: Alternatives to the 700R? '89 formula
I guess maybe my 87' IROC is a record holder. I bought it from the original owner in 1992 with 60,000 miles on it and had no problems with anything.
I now have 265,000 miles on it and still have not had any problems with the 700R4, the 9 bolt rearend, and get this! - still has the original fuel pump in the tank!!!! The original motor was still running but in 2002 I pulled it out and put in a 383 with AFR heads and upgraded some of the TPI stuff.
I have a 67' Camaro and back in the 2001 I installed a 700R4 in it. I went through 2 different transmission builders before finally getting a good build. Stay away from TCI's junk!!!
Every time I hear bad stuff about the 700R4 I wonder who rebuilt it!!!!
'Pro Built' sounds like he knows what he's doing. And when someone knows how to build a 700R4 correctly with the correct good stuff, corvette servo, etc, you'll have a transmission that should last a long time. The adjustment to the TV cable is very critical with the 700R4 as well!!!
just my 2 cents.

I've got one of the modified Street/Strip kits that Pro Built Automatics is talking about. Trust me on this. It's the setup to have.
