TKO shifter-what should i do??
I did the TKO swap a couple of years ago and my shifting still sucks. It's not smooth at all. I have been told it's the 'new' wearing off of the trans. It's got about 1000 miles on it. (don't drive it much) I used stock bell housing and an adapter plate and the tremec offset shifter and that was suppose to center the shifter but it still hit the console. I know how to fix that particular problem but i was wondering if i should change the shifter altogether because i'm starting to think the shifter itself is why i can't get a smooth shift. Is there one i can buy that will center the stick? or, I can make a plate to move the handle for the right shifter. or is it still to new to shift smooth?

That was my husband's theory - B4 he drove it himself.
Maybe unsmooth shift is not a good description. there seems to be a lot of tension in the shift. Is there one that would be more user friendly to someone with girly arms?

loool ohhh yea i get you. you are describing more like a notchy shifting feel?
honestly if its not excessively hard to shift id just check the adjustments on the shifter ( there should be tension adjustments as well as throw stops ) other than that try running through the gears as much as you can to wear it in.
At the last shop i worked at one of our good "friend/customers" had a fox body mustang with a tremec tranny and a B&M ripper that was notchy to me too but i loved the way it felt. you knew you were in gear then out then in again.

Re: TKO shifter-what should i do??
well it depends on the shifter you have. the adjustments im speaking of would be if you have an aftermarket shifter. IE B&M ripper or a Hurst shifter,
when you are looking at the shifter with the covers off of it you will see it bolted to the tranny. there should be a few bolts or allens. a couple will adjust the throw stops ( they keep you from moving the shifter too far) and there should be an adjustment for shifter tension.
but this all hinges on what the actual shifter is

Re: TKO shifter-what should i do??
the tko is a notchy shifting trans, thats just the way it is.
After you get some more miles on it, things will get better, but it will still ne notchy. I've been looking at the Steeda tri-ax shifter for the tko's, looks like a nice piece and the handle that come with it seems like it would place the know in the right place as well. Check it out.

Re: TKO shifter-what should i do??
the notchiness of it is ok. i pulled off the rubber boot & was looking at the other tko shifter that i have (not the offset one that's in the car, but i don't imagine the inside is much different from that one) holy springs, man! they seem kinda big. is that normal? it's been so long since i looked at my t5 shifter but i don't remember those. my t5 fell into gear and tho it was easy to drive i'm not really looking for that. just don't want to fight it to stay in line from 1st to 2nd. girly arms. i have not tried adjusting it yet because it is really freakin' cold. but may step out to the garage long enough to get the torx bits and take the little plate off of this one i have here in the house.

Re: TKO shifter-what should i do??
i loosened the plates beside the stick and now the springs stick through almost 1/4" There's definitely less tension when i move the shifter stub side to side. Am i done & can repeat this on the one in the car? should i put lock washers around the screws and tigten the plates back up on them? if so i will try it like this for awhile. Can anybody recommend a good handle? i'm using a homemade one now. it works but it's veeeeery ugly & i can't put my console shifter cover back on because the stick isn't small enough to go through the hole in the leather. the mustang ones are bent is that what i need? thanks for the help guys.
