My T56 Swap Pics

Well it's all together, did this whole swap in one day minus drilling the the hole for the master cylinder. I didn't know where the hell to drill because this car didn't have a stamped spot like most cars..So The next day I just eyeballed it and cut. And then after a few more cuts...I got it right lol ah well here are the pics. The only thing I don't have pics of is the new GM flywheel from Hawks.
Oh and BTW this is going in my daily driver, the 89' IROC.

Picked up the tranny from the shipping dock, yes in the very car it was to be installed in lol.

Re: My T56 Swap Pics

Now I am missing pics from this part because I was working alone, and trying to finish it before the end of the day so, After I got the T56 in, I bolted it to the bellhousing and installed the tranny mount, crossmember and torque arm and driveshaft.

Then I lowered the car and started working on the interior part. I pulled out the center console, the old shifer assembly and the old brake pedal. Then I drilled a hole where the shifter would be coming through the trans tunnel to see how much and where needed to be cut out for the shifter. I then proceeded to cut a square out of the trans tunnel and filled the tranny with fluid and installed the shifter.

Re: My T56 Swap Pics

looks like it didnt take you long at all. How did the crossmembrane work for you? i ordered the same one but w/o the d/s loop.

I didnt see or read anything regarding wiring, neutral safety switch? reverse lockout? reverse lights? speedo?

how big of a pita was the pedal swapout?

i have everything to put my t56 on my transam, just need time and nice weather.

Did it go on the vehicle in your sig? got any pics of the tt setup? any videos of the t56 would be cool too. keep up the good work

Re: My T56 Swap Pics

Yea I made sure I had absolutely everything to complete the swap so the only thing holding me back would be the labor. cross member works great, the only trouble I had was getting the damn torque arm bolted in. since the lift I was using was a drive onto kinda deal, I had to use a jack to jack up the body and unload the rear suspension to get the torque arm bolts in. And yes I didn't wire a thing up...Mechanical speedo in the dash so that was a no go($300 for the conversion box yea right) The tranny didn't come with the connectors for neutral safety or reverse lights and the car was auto before so I just said F*ck it.
Pedal swap was a bit tougher than I expected, the bolts above the steering column are tough to get to. but it can be done with patience.
And no this is in my daily driver 89 IROC here is a pic. The only vids I have with the T56 is the dyno vid if you wanna see that...

Re: My T56 Swap Pics

I did the pedal swap on my 83 factory auto, and the hole for the master was already there.... there was a plug that was gooped over with sealant from the factory. everything i read about said the hole will need to be drilled so i was prepared to do it and it turned out it was already there... lines up perfect with the pedals.... am I missing somelthing? why would my 83 have it, then later cars not have it?

Re: My T56 Swap Pics

FWIW, The autometer electronic autocomp speedo is a pretty stealth fit into the 3rdgen cluster. The T56 VSS will drive it directly. I've done the '730 ECM upgrade (me, really.. ;-)) and it can read the T56 VSS also, with correct scaling settings from the autocomp.

Re: My T56 Swap Pics

I read that there might be problems with third gen clutch pedals engaging too far out for the T56... have you had any problems with this? Also do you have to get a dif starter for the T56 flywheel?

Re: My T56 Swap Pics

Nice install on an equally nice car. Mine was an auto prior to the T-56 going in and I got lucky on the wiring. The guy sent the trans with plugs and about a foot of wire attached to them. But you can get the plugs from your local Chevy dealership. Got a question for you, if you could help me out. I had to drop my trans back out due to a faulty clutch and now I'll be reinstalling it this weekend. What are the torque specs on the bellhousing to block bolts, clutch to flyhell bolts, and the trans to bellhousing bolts. It was over a year ago that I put it in and don't have that info anymore.

I have never heard that before, but now that i think about it, that could be my problem.
When pushing the pedal in, sitting at a stand still, putting it into 1st gear, it feels really stiff going in. The shifter stops and then with a lot more force it will kind of "pop" into gear. It also will not go into any other gear while driving unless the pedal is to the floor. What is confusing to me is the friction point is right where it should be, about 1/2 ways up. Do 4th gen pedals bolt right into 3rd gens? I have tried new slave and master cylinders with the same problem.

And as far as the starter thing goes, I did the swap no problem with the stock starter, but then about a month later it went out. I got under there and tried to change it and it was kind of stuck against the bellhousing. As far as the gearing on the flywheel, it worked fine, just fitment against the bellhousing was a little tight.

Thanks.
I don't remember the torque specs but I am sure you can get them online somewhere. If not, just get a repair manual for a 4th gen camaro.

Re: My T56 Swap Pics

you can use 4th gen pedals. all you have to do is cut the gas pedal off and use your factory one, and then you have to enlargen the top 2 holes on the pedal assembly.

Re: My T56 Swap Pics

hey i know this is kind of a silly question but ive never read anything about it.

As mentioned above i am in the process of doing a similar swap myself. my question is:

where did you get pressure plate to flywheels bolts? ive seen them on summitracing.com for arp's for like 11bux. do you have a part number if you bought a new set?

i will take my flywheel to a local performance shop and hope they have arp's in stock but its sat. night right now. haha

oh and one last thing, does the car seem any noisier in the inside due to the shifter hole? i'm planning on RAMMATing my floor when i cut the hole for the shifter but i'm still debating on doing that or spendin the $250+ on something better

So how bout any of you other guys with the T56, what pedals did you use? What about the starter? Should a sbc starter be used or LT1??

flywheel bolts and pressure plate bolts I just got from GM. I got a pretty sweet discount because of the shop I work at. you have to use a LT1 starter.

This looks awesome, do you think you would be able to remove the trim ring and glass off the speedo to get it to fit right up on the factory plastic?

wait i just saw the button on the glass, if the trim ring comes off I bet you could paint it black, the reason im asking is because I am going to have to do something like this soon

Yes, you can remove the trim and glass from the speedo and fit it behind the factory front.

http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~davis/z28...s/DCP_3504.jpg

The trip odo button doesn't line up with the factory hole, so you either have to make a new one (like I did), or just cut it back and not use it.. (Still need it to program it, but once programmed, I've never used it again).

Yeah, it's right below the autometer button, hidden in that pic by the tilt lever. Here's a side shot:

he used a LT1 style transmission. LT1 style is what you want. ls1 is a bit diff. for ex. the clutch is a push instead of pull. you def. need to search, search and you shall find.

from the research that ive done the t5 t56 and 700r4 are all the same lenght and have the same splines. so you should be able to reuse your t5 driveshaft

You can use the stock 3rd gen sbc starter, it's just a tight fit.

It's from a 95' Z28 LT1. Only LT1 style T56's will work with SBC's, the LS style's have different bellhousing's and longer input shafts.

You are correct. Actually, all 3rd and 4th Gen driveshafts are 100% interchangeable no matter what Tranny (factory) the car has.
Same splines, same length.
