700R4- What year did the connector change from 4 prong to 5 prong?
Anyone know for sure? I know 93 F-Bodies have a 5-prong connector. Was the last year for the 4 prong 89,90,91,or 92? Thanks

Sounds like you are talking about two different trannies. The 700 (up to some '93's)always had a square connector while the 4L60E ('93 up) had a round one.

Car: 84 Z28
Engine: 355 (fastburn heads, LT4 HOT cam)
Transmission: 700R4
Axle/Gears: 9-bolt, 3.27
The connector on the 4L60E will be on the opposite side of the one on the 700R4. I also think there are more than 5 pins in it on the 4L60E. 93 was the transition year from the 700 to the 4L60E, with some vehicles getting the 700 while others got the "E".

Working on:
'84 Z28 LG4 305 with 200,000 original miles!
Added dual elec fans.
145 MPH IROC Speedo
Building 430 HP 350 (ZZ430)
using primarily GMPP parts.
Short block sitting on a stand. (Man, those Fast-Burn heads look good, (just sitting there doing nothing!LOL))

Also, there were no 4L60Es in 93, just 4L60s. All 93 F-Bodies got a 4L60, there were no changes midyear. How do I know? Look at aftermarket throttle bodies for LT1 cars; 92-93 has a specific part number, and 94-97 has a part number. This is because the 92 & 93 have a TV cable for downshifts, and the 94-97 downshift electronically. Make sense?

Ok, lets try this...
Does anyone know what years this tranny will work in? Will it work in 87-92 models? Don't 90-92 have an electronically driven speedometer? I am pretty sure this 89 tranny is cable driven...
Can anyone help me?

The LAST year for the 4L60 (700) was 1993 so that ws the last year for the 4 prong connector. Let's try this: What do you have and/or what are you trying to do what with?

I was trying to put this tranny into my 93 Z28, but was told by several people the 89 tranny had a four prong connection while the 93 tranny has a 5 prong. So it wouldn't work.
I am thinking about hanging on to the tranny, and possibly buying another thirdgen with a dead trans. So I need to know what this will work in. In the other thread you said it will work in all years, BUT, I know it won't work in 93 F-Bodies. Did you mean 84-92?
