I just bought an '89 Formula 350, and the car is in excellent condition. However, the interior needs to be installed but before we go about putting it in I was thinking of putting a T-5 transmission in the car. The 700r4 that's in it is in great condition but to be hones tI ride a bike and I like having full control. So I was wondering if anyone has any advice, tips, etc? Is there any reason I shouldn't and what do I need to worry about when I do?
T5's aren't rated for a for a whole lot of torque, but if you don't beat it, you will be fine. Easy swap. If I had to do it again I could probably knock it out in under 3 hours with a competent helper.
t-56 or super t-10
t-56 is a 6 speed
super t-10 is a 4 speed
i'd go with the t-56 if it were me
only drawback is the pricetag
the t-5 WILL last if:
a) you dont have sticky tires
b) you have relatively high rear gears (ie, no 2.73's or anything lower than 3.42 or so)
c) you drive it like you have a bit of common sense.
i dont have one, but many people put t-5's behind a mild or even more than mild 350 and do fine.
just dont take it to the strip and expect it to last more than 2 runs or so.
Pro Built's modified Trans Go shift kit.....Makes driving the automatic waaaay more fun than when it's stock. I love mine. And the reviews for it on TGO are nothing but good.
hawks thirdgen parts will have a complete swap kit IIRC.
after them, people on the board may be selling kits with everything you would need.
if you dont have any luck there, buy a LT1 or LS1 4th gen that was wrecked and take everything out of it that you need. then part it out and get some of your money back... you might even break even if it has desirable interior parts in good shape.
basically just dont go and buy a spanking new one unless you have to.
you will spend way too much money IMO
