LT1 swap... should i use the 700r4 or the 4l60e that comes with it

Hi,

I bought a 96 impala ss motor and tranny, still bolted together, full swap.

I have a built up 700r4 or 4l60 in there now, but its v6..

I would rather keep my tranny if I can just put a v8 shroud on there..

will the one from the 4l60e work?

Or should I just go 4l60e with 78k on it

Dan

the 4l60e would require wiring harness and computer all to be swapped but your 700 will not bolt up to the v8 if it was behind a 2.8 and they dont make an adapter plate to go from that bolt pattern to the v8 my opinion you need to get a 700 that has proper bolt pattern

the 4l60e is much more electoniclly anvanced than the 700. The 700only uses a plug to lock up converter. were as (corect me if im wrong) is running off the computer constantly with the motor. Its confusing but just stick with the one bolted to the motor.

Re: LT1 swap... should i use the 700r4 or the 4l60e that comes with it

that makes sense...

I wanted to use my 700 because its fresh, and built up.
maybe 10k miles verses 78k on the 4l60e bolted to the motor.

I know I would need the bellhousing , a new torque converter, and a 93 lt1 throttle body.
When the shipped me my trans, it had the wrong bellhousing on it, and my mechanic used the one off my stock 700r4,
I thought this meant they shipped me the 90 * v8 vs the 60* v6, and I thought just this peice was needed to go between...

Anyone have experiance with 96 impala SS?
How do they shift?

What he said. The bellhousing is cast into the case on a 700r4, not a separate piece like on a T5 or T56. From the two transmissions you have, the 4L60E is your only choice.

does a corvette stall fit in a 60* trans??? I thought the bellhousing was to small for a 90*converter. Thats new for me.

Re: LT1 swap... should i use the 700r4 or the 4l60e that comes with it

Ok, I guess I am going to use the 4l60e..

Is my speedo going to be plug and play with this?

Ive read posts on here saying it worked no problem with stock VSS, and others saying no go.

Also, will my stock shifter work for this tranny? its out of a floor shifted impala ss, so I need new cable / linkage ?

Any advice?

thanks

700R4's are pretty much junk if you plan on putting any kind of real power through them.
