so i just got the 700r4 out of my 84 Z/28. a while back i picked up a complete 5 spd set up from a 87 RS. to my surprise the bolt pattern on my crank doesn't match the pattern on the 87 5spd trans. also does an auto crank differ from a manual car crank? it doesn't look like my pilot bearing is going to fit. do autos and manuals use the same drive shaft? thanks for the help

The crank is the same, the driveshaft is the same. The flywheel is different because 84 is a two piece rear main seal, and 87 is a 1 piece rear main seal.
Edit: To clarify, Auto - 5spd the crank and driveshaft is the same. The crank 84 - 87 is different because 86-up have a one piece rear main seal.
Drew is the man... as usual, he is absolutely right.
I wish I had a 2-pc main flywheel for ya... but if you want to get rid of the one you have, I could use it, as I am about to do the exact same swap on my 88 GTA and I don't have a flywheel yet.
Just buy one from the parts store. A used flywheel is probably going to need to be turned anyway, and how many times has it already been turned? Further ahead to buy a new one and get it over with. Subtract the resurface charge, and the value really starts to stand out.

Ya know, Drew... the very same thing had occurred to me. I think the flywheel in question is around $100 at Advance.
If you buy a used one, it will cost $25 to $35 to resurface it, and if you pay $30 for it, you are paying about $50 to $65 for a used part... one that may have hot spots and also may have been machined too many times.
Add to that -- if you buy it out of state, you'll pay shipping charges, too. And flywheels ain't light. Plus if the guy at Advance gives you the wrong flywheel, you can return it easily.

Hello Drew!!!
I thought that the crank was actually different, due to the different flange, having a 3 inch bolt patteren, as opposed to a 3 5/8 bolt pattern!!! This was all because of the rear main seal being changed from two to one piece!!
The cranks can be interchanged, but at this point, I can't remember the specifics, about doing that!!

Hello S10GUY!!
The auto and manual cranks should only differ in the fact that the auto crank shouldn't have a pilot bearing, as it's not required, whereas the manual crank would!!!
