Could 2500 rpm stall converter make my engine overheat?

My TA has 2500 rpm stall converter (I was just finishing a complete restoration incl. new engine, trans and converter). I have the trans cooler in the radiator connected (Summit aluminum radiator) and a small auxilary trans cooler in front of the engine.

When I was testing the car the engine was starting to get hot (220+, the fan was ON). I did turn it of but found out there was a small leak in a line to the trans cooler (might have lost some trans fluid but the transmisson seemed to work properly). I did turn the engine off an the temp continued to climb to around 230 (the engine temp).

Could it be because of the loss of fluid or is it possible that the stall converter is producing that much heat?

You have other problems, the 2500 stall will not cause the engine to overheat. I would look at the tranny cooler in front ot the radiator, it may be blocking too many cooling fins. These car are very dependent on air flow for cooling (example: the airdam is important). Think about this: If you have A/C condenser & tranny cooler in front of the radiator, what are they doing to the air flow???

if you dont have a tranny temp gauge you will be guessing. the transmission fluid will rise in temp if you play with the converter. and if the lines still run thru the radiator and the tranny temp goes up a lot it will heat the radiator up as well.

I have a tranny temp gauge but havent finished connecting it.... I will do that before I will start it up next time. There is no AC and there is a new airdam. The auxilary cooler is not that big that it should be a problem.

do the tranny cooler lines go thru the radiator also. hook up the gauge and then go and see how hot the tranny is getting.

Re: Could 2500 rpm stall converter make my engine overheat?

I run a 2200 and have no problems running under 200 on even scorching hot days, I also have a small external that it runs through after the stock in rad cooler.

If its a sloppy convertor, anything is possiable, all convertors are not made the same.

Could also put a small fan on the trans one of that's it......

Or bump up the stock rad one, the mod thats in fashion now is to do the Furd Tarurs fan mod, which will keep even a warmed over BB cool.

As I said there is no Air Condition (and nothing in the way for the radiator).

It just has an aluminum Radiator (from Summit), the cooler in the radiator and the auxilary coolers are both connected.

I will connect the gauge to see what is going on.

the fans don't come on till about 230/240 coolant temp, that's normal.

I have about the same set up. 2500 stall, 350 engine(slight build) summit alum. radiator. While it warms up, my temp runs between 215 and 220. Then it settles to around 180 to 185 with fan on(also manual) and stays there. I am using the radiator trans cooler as well as an aftermarket tucked up in front of the radiator.

Thanks, I am starting to think that the fan is the problem, its a single fan and i covers about half of the radiator. I am buying a LT1 dual fans this weekend and I hope that will solve the problem.

Were you parked dead still in say a garage ? What was the outside temp ? The only way torque convertor woul heat up is in heavy traffic and then it would raise engine temp slightly but it would boil your your tranny fluid . Been there and done .
