9bolt woes

9bolt woes

Well dammit!
I finally got the 9bolt together, modeled the caliper position after the Delco Moraine calipers on the other one I have. Apparently the PBR calipers are both at the rear of the diff, where the older ones have the passenger side caliper to the front. Looks like I get to pull the axle and flip the mounting bracket because the bracket holes are not symmetrical.
Also that means replacing the axle bearing and seal because they are not reusable!
Live and learn.
Hope someone finds this useful.

you don't need to replace the bearing or seal.

Pressing the bearing off of the axle will alomost surely damage it, so almost always the bearing and seal must be replaced.

If all you're doing is flipping the brake mounting bracket around you don't need to remove the axle flange so you don't need to remove the bearing. Unless I'm not clear on exactly what you need to do. The hole in the brake bracket is bigger than the bearing.

Base 91, these brackets are from Ed Miller for the PBR conversion. The hole in them is smaller than the axle flange. I have to have the other side of the bracket facing the diff., can't just spin the bracket because the mounting holes are not symmetrical.

My bearings, seals are on their 3rd installation , no leaks. I clean the outer edge of the seal and apply a very small bead of RTV on it.

scoflaw, I pulled the axle and flipped the plate then put a thin dab of silicone on the seal like you suggested.
The axle came out really easily. Makes me wonder if I had the seal all the way seated? How did you seat your seals? I used an old input shaft against the piece that bolts to the housing, through the holes in the axle flange and rotated the axle to work it all the way around hammering against the input shaft. Did I do it right?

The 4 bolts that hold the axle flange on are holding the seal in place, no hammering. Thin bead of sealer on the outer edge of seal, works for me.

When I tightened the bolts down the first time, the cover started to bend. I'm wondering if I didn't have the bearing race seated all the way or something.
